IMP. IMBO
d"fr,,{ynr,fw VhP.
w Mashpee lncCusion and'Diversity Committee
16 Great Neck RoadNorth
Mashyee, M-A 0264.9
and Mr. Kupferman was in attendance as well. The Committee had three people, DPW
Director Laurent, the Chair, and one additional person. He made his proposal, they discussed
the proposal, and following the discission the proposal was rejected at that meeting.
Afew days later, he followed up via e-mail with Catherine Laurent, asking for an explanation
and basis for rejection, additionally, if anything further could be done. He has not heard back
for a few weeks. He learned that Committee is the deciding body, but there is no recourse. He
wanted to explain that to this group, as the proposal has come to an end and there is nowhere
else to turn.
Mr. Klein stated the Jewish Congregation has their own burial site, he asked if it were possible,
the reason it was denied was to not segregate the cemetery and maybe don't want the
obligation of segregating every denomination.
Mr. Zefzaf commented many communities set aside land as dedicated for certain groups. This
country is changing; we need to learn how to deal with that. Maybe this Town isn't ready yet or
the climate currently is not right.
Mr. Kupferman noted that seemed to be a real concern during the meeting, the designating of
specific areas, because currently there is no segregation in that cemetery. They were also
looking for additional space at Town Meeting. He thought that was the main reason.
Mr. Zefzaf is done pursuing this, he can see the writing. The cemetery has limited space and is
overbuilt.
Ms. Johnson-Graham would still like to work on it, and support it, with no recourse there is no
appeal process.
Mr. Klein will call the Jewish Congregation this week and ask if there is a Jewish cemetery on
Cape Cod.
ADDITIONAL TOPICS
Ms. Stevenson has to submit a letter of resignation. She is choosing to resign from the
Committee, but not right away. She will stay on as a Committee member but she will no longer
be Chair.
4
