MA 02649 FINANCE COMMITTEE MINUTES Town Hall February 19, 1988 Present : Edward Dolan , John Ferriday , Carl Heller , Joyce Howell , and William Towner The Finance Committee Meeting commenced at 4 p . m. The new Fire Chief , Robert Ridgeway , and the Administrative Secretary of the Fire Department joined the meeting to discuss the Fire FY89 budget . Also present was Selectman Thomas, Executive Secretary Murphy and Vern Polka the Town Accountant . The total of the Fire Budget as presented is $929 , 279 . 43 . This represents the following : Chief and Deputy Chief Account $71 , 055 . 92 contractual Fire Fighters Salary Account 384 , 332 . 04 contractual Fire Fighters Wage Account 288 , 072 . 87 Administrative Secretary Account 15 , 909 . 60 contractual Expense Account 169 , 909 . 00 Mr . Towner questioned the Chief about the necessity of the Deputy Fire Chief . The Chief noted that the Deputy Fire Chief is also the Fire Marshal and as such he interprets the codes . He is an important staff and resource person . Chairman Heller noted that he felt the fees and fines of the Fire Department should be increased . He also noted that it was his belief that there should be a fine for the first two needless fire calls and after that the responsible party shouldbe required to pay the exact cost of the fire call . The Chief was in . total agree- ment with these suggestions . The Fire Department budget was discussed . The Chief ' s salary as agreed upon is $42 , 892 . Dolan questioned the Chief about the $109 , 859 . 00 for Career Recall in the Wage Account . He asked how much this figure could be reduced if the town were to hire four new fire fighters . The Chief not that this would probably be reduced by 40% and there would be savings in sick leave and vacation .
