Finance Committee Minutes
March 3, 1988
Page 3.
that it is his guess that the four new men will cost $85,000. These men will
offset required services and they will only slightly offset the wage account.
There will not be that much of a savings, and even perhaps a net increase.
Jean Thomas noted that the Fire Department is dropping the article
requesting 4 additional firefighters to begin January 1, 1989 (bringing the
total of new firefighters to 8) . However, she inquired about hiring four
seasonal firefighters from 5/15 to 9/15. This would give the Department the
seasonal coverage it needs. 5/15 to 6/30 would be covered by an article
on the Special May warrant and this would be backed by another article on
the annual warrant to cover the rest of the time. Carl Heller was strongly
against this idea. He noted that the Town might go for four seasonal men and
forget the four regular men. He felt this would be really risky for the
Department to try and would seriously jeopardize the four permanent men they
are also seeking. Jean and Laurie agreed with this as did Joe Murphy.
The Fire Department FY 89 Budget figures as of this meeting are as follows:
Chief & Deputy Salary Account $75,323.00
Firefighters Salary Account 390,224.04
Firefighters Wage account 263,454.97*
Fire Department Administrative Secretary 15,939.00
Fire Department Expense Account 160,214. 70
* This may possibly be reduced if the article for 4 new men passes.
$16,654 will be included in the expenses for a 4-Channel Cassette Logger
($4,674), a computer ($4,000) and four Scott 4.5 Positive Pressure Air Parks
($7,980).
Finance Committee members received a sheet with figures showing the
estimated cost to complete the upstairs of the Fire Department. The .
total figure to do the work ,is now set at $15,300 and will be an article
request.
The Finance Committee meeting adjourned at 10: 15 p.m. The next
scheduled meeting is March 9th at 7 p.m. Chairman Heller also noted that
there may be a need to schedule meetings on Saturdays to complete the
budget review work.
Gail McNabb
Board Secretary
