Personnel Board Meeting
August 23, 1982 Page 2
• Selectwoman Thomas pointed out that she was not saying that Mr. Fitzgerald was not
the best individual, but she felt that the Board of Selectmen should have received
more recommendations.
Caroline stated that Mr. Pontes had the education and background and that was why he
was recommended; however, upon checking out references, his personal life was not
satisfactory.
At this point, Caroline asked why Jim Ames was not re-appointed?
Selectwoman Thomas replied that she felt Mr. Ames did an excellent job as Natural
Resource officer but had a problem with administration.
Caroline then asked if Selectwoman Thomas had any one else to mention.
Jean replied that she guessed she was being critical, but was hoping that it would be
constructive criticism.
Caroline replied that the Personnel Board does the best they can.
Selectwoman Thomas asked if it were better for her to sit across the hall or come
before the Board with suggestions.
Bob asked if she were saying that the Personnel Board was trying to push a candidate
on the Board of Selectmen stating that. they dont care who is hired as long as the
• individual is qualified and that they would gladly go back and do it over again.
Selectwoman Thomas asked what the Personnel Boards policy was for considering a can-
didate living in Mashpee as she feels that there are a couple of applicants which could
do the job.
Bob replied that the Personnel Board takes the most qualified individuals to be inter-
viewed no matter where they. live.
Selectman Garland stated that he did not hold to someone who lives in the town getting
the job if the qualifications were not there.
Bob stated that the Personnel Board is trying to take the best people and they may not
necessarily be from Mashpee and that the Personnel Board would be willing to take two
Monday evenings to interview candidates if necessary. He stated that the Board did not
feel that they were eliminating qualified candidates-
Joe Murphy recommended that when dealing with Mashpee residents, it would be helpful if
Mashpee residents could be interviewed from a public relations standpoint just to give
them an opportunity of a shot at the job. He stated that he feels that there is a need
to look at people from our own community.
Bob stated that the Personnel Board cannot sit down and interview everyone who applies
from Mashpee if not qualified just for public relations.
Dave asked if it would be easier to retain someone from town rather than an outsider.
• Bob stated that if there was a person that was a hard worker, a poorly done resume
would not make a bit of difference.
