LEISURE SERVICES ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING MARCH 5. 1996 MASHPEE MIDDLE SCHOOL - ROOM 133 Present: Absent: Also Present: Maureen Paxton George Costa Gus Frederick Linda Young Ron Roberts John Williams Kim Whitney Cheryl Shepley Terrie Cook Sheila Arnold OPENING OF MEEITNG - Maureen Paxton opened the meeting at 6:35 PM at the Mashpee Middle School Room 133. II. SECRETARY'S REPORT- Pat Riley made a motion to approve the Minutes of February 6, 1996. Linda Young seconded. Motion carried. I11. COMMUNICATIONS - 1. Letter from Denattment of Retardation - Gus passed out letter from Department of Retardation. Gus explained that we were awarded a 55,000.00 Grant for inclusion in our department for such programs as Kids Night Out, Kids Klub Pre-school and Afterschool programs. This would enable us to get support staff to service mentally and physically handicapped children. Gus has a meeting with Grace Day to identify individuals who can benefit from this program. KKPS can service an additional 3 children who are special needs; KKAM - 2 children; KKAS - 6 children; KNO - 3 children; Ropes Course - 23 children. An additional $5,000.00 for programming next year - $2,500 needs to be matched by another group - possibly the Coalition. 2. Guide to Open Meetine Law - Maureen Paxton mentioned packets regarding Open Meeting law are available at Town Hall. 3. A discussion took place on the proposed recycling program at the landfill. We are now going through Bob Sullivan for transfer of Quonset Hut to landfill area. This should happen by this spring. Cheryl Shepley would like to see retired people get involved, along with teachers, and children. Profits could go to the classes. Cheryl had concerns about insurance. Cheryl wanted dates so that she could start to generate interest. Maureen asked how items would be obtained. Gus mentioned he had the name of a gentleman who was interested in this project and he would refer him to Cheryl. Cheryl would like article done in the newspaper to generate awareness. IV. REPORTS - A. Old Business - Discussion 1. Capital Improvement Update - Looking for two items for fiscal year 1996 - Transportation - Bus or Van, and Expansion of Rec Building. Both failed. Plan may be brought to the Fall Town meeting to request an override for capital building expansion. Gus would like to look for Grant money for the building expansion.
