Youth Commission Page 2
Minutes
April 26, 1994
evening, then alternating with the 9th through 12th graders on the opposite night. A Ping Pong table
from the
Middle School was also being used. The committee recommended that additional volunteers, if needed,
could be advertised on the Cable TV channel. The committee was grateful for Mrs. Geary to share her
Information, and would like the committee to become more involved in the program, and eventually
become its sponsor.
3. Youth Employment Program 7:35pm
Information was provided in relation to the Summer Youth Employment (YES)program which
was being proposed. Gus Frederick contacted the Natick Recreation Department, which sponsors a
"Job Bank"for youth. (Program description provided). This program uses various Bulletin Boards in key
areas of the Town, where individuals who are looking for youth to help out as baby-sitters, Yard Clean-
ups, lawn care, etc., can "post" their needs. Youth can then check the boards to see what is available.
They can then contact those in need, and make their own arrangements. Bob Govoni stated that we
should check on legality at Town Hall, and if there are no problems -we should start advertising using.
Cable TV. Motion by Jodie Granucci to accept report, and move forward with a"Job bank". Seconded
by Joey Geary. Motion passed.
B. New Business -
1. Recreation Building Expansion
Gus Frederick provided drawings to all members of a proposed expansion of the Recreation
Building located on Route 130. This building presently serves as the location of Kid's Klub Pre-School
during the school year, and Kid's Klub Summer Camp in season. Presently, it is a building measuring
approximately 18'X40'(1100 square feet). It has a kitchen, large all-purpose room, an office, and two
bathrooms - one handicapped accessible. A basement underneath is used for storage only. The
proposed expansion would increase the total square footage to 3650 sq. ft. and would make available
the basement area for use. In addition, a usable second floor would be available in this design.
Jodie Granuccf asked how this proposed expansion came about. Gus Frederick indicated that
a proposal was submitted under the Capital Improvement Plan of the Town to provide more space for
summer camp programming, as many children in town are turned away each year for the Department's
camp as the present building can only accommodate 23 children. In addition, with the increase of
youth leagues on the adjacent fields, more groups are requesting the use of the facility for meetings and
activities.
Bob Govont indicated that he would like to review the plans and make some recommendations
on changes that could be addressed. He would share these at our next meeting.
Gus Frederick indicated that the building design is a concept at this time, and the next step is to review
the plans, comment on them, then get them back to Greg Taylor(DPW). Detailed estimates would then
be requested. The building improvements are at this time included in the Capital Improvement budget
for 1997.
V. ADJOURNMENT
Jodie made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:00 PM. Catherine West seconded. Motion
carried. Next meeting will be held on April 26 at 6:30 PM , location to be determined..
Rectfully submitted,
Gus Frederick, Leisure Service Director
