• MASHPEE HIGH SCHOOL Building COMMITTEE
JULY 27 , 1993
MASHPEE TOWN HALL
Members Present: Peter Dinizio, Janice Mills , Robert Mills,
Steve Greelish , Bill Jones, Paul Griffin , Merry Sue Ahlgren , Joe
Polito, Dr. DeMoura, Tom Fudala, Greg Taylor, Bill Martiros
Also Present: Carl Franceschi and Gary Larson from DRA
MINUTES
Ms. Ahlgren made a motion to accept the minutes of July 20, 1993 .
Mr. Griffin seconded the motion . All members were in favor.
DISCUSSION WITH ARCHITECTS
Carl Franceschi and Gary Larson were present from DRA.
Contract: it has not been signed yet because the attorney and Bob
Writenhour have been on vacation .
Chairman Dinizio will speak with the Executive Secretary's office
regarding this.
The architects presented a first draft of a program and budget
• which the Committee reviewed.
Mr. Franceschi explained the numbers are based on a formula
established by the State. It is meant only as a discussion. The
State allows 155 sq feet per student. They also allow unlimited
excess sq footage based on demonstrated need for special needs,
collaborative uses and transitional bi-lingual education .
Community use is limited to a maximum of 1 , 800 sq feet.
Budget: this fiscal year the State reimburses $145. 25 per sq.
foot. This figure may go up slightly with this fiscal year' s
budget. This draft shows a maximum allowable cost of $32
million.
Initial Phase: is for 1 ,000 students but is makes sense to
enlarge core areas now because of a projected, expanding
enrollments; the State allows that.
The numbers presented are just guidelines, Mashpee can choose to
build less. This draft does not reflect Mashpee's programs.
These numbers just set the limits. /f
r
The State reimbursement is based on actual cost of the project,
up to a limit.
Presently, it takes an average of 2 years before the project is
funded . It is retroactively funded for all interest accrued.
Funding is based on priority. Mr. Franceschi can't imagine a
. more sever overcrowding problem than Mashpee has. He does not
know of any other high schools being built in the State.
1
