CALAgRO
Educational Planner
235 Pond ;Street Cohasaet, MA 02025 617-383-0992 office & fax
April 281 1994
To: Fellow School Planners
Mashpee High School Project
Mashpee, Massachusetts
It is very satisfying to see the revision of the
educational specifications for the new Mashpee High School
moving toward their ultimate form within established
limitations as a result of our joint discussions.
I have several observations on the discussions to date.
1. The educational program for 1180 students in the
thirty-five period academic week calls for 34 general
classrooms at 80 percent utilization or 32 general classrooms
at 85 percent. (See the educational program table in the
February 3, 1994, educational specifications document. )
Thirty-one such classrooms places the utilization factor at
86. 9 or 87 percent. The original planning standard was 80
percent. :
2 . Similarly, the educational program as established calls
for 9 science/lab spaces at a utilization rate of 80. percent.
Eight such science spaces raises the utilization factor to
87. 75 percent. The original planning standard was 80 percent.
3. A suggestion has been made to use the large group ,
instruction room as a scheduled teaching station to supplant
deleted general classrooms. Such use would defeat its
intended purpose and would nullify its use as a support space
available school-wide for flexible programming. If the space
is actually used as a regularly scheduled teaching station,
it is' very likely that it will eventually become the location
for supervised study halls and in-house suspensions, as its
size, and the need for only a single teacher/supervisor,
invite such usage.
i
-1- i
