DR- JOHN-q. CaLABR-O- -61.7-3830992- '' - ---P. 02 -
4. Care should be taken that teaching stations are not so
far reduced from the numbers required for the program that
the library perforce becomes a scheduled teaching station for
regular day classes or the cafeteria for study halls. Such
usage may well come about if overcrowding beyond the planned
enrollment occurs, but careful planning now and creation of
the required number of scheduled teaching stations according
to established planning procedures should preclude that
happening until actual student enrollment begins to exceed
the planned enrollment.
5 . The physical education program as established for 1180
students requires a minimum of three teaching stations in
which students are taught in groups of thirty twice per week.
Two such -spaces are provided in the main gym. Two more are
currently provided in the smaller gym. This arrangement was
made to support the intra- and inter-mural athletics programs
and community programs, as well. There are currently three
other spaces listed: the swimming pool and the two small
areas--the aerobics room and the weight training room. if
the small gym or the pool are deleted for whatever reason,
care should be taken to be certain that at least three p.e.
teaching stations, each capable of accommodating thirty
students, are provided. The effect of the deletion of any
spaces:oh the athletic -programs should also be carefully
assessed.
6. The 'health education program as currently scheduled
requires two stations at nearly 100 percent utilization. It
is unlikely thatthisdegree of efficiency is desirable since
it limits flexibility in scheduling. To provide greater
flexibility, three health education rooms were originally
planned. If both the educational and space programs remain
unchanged, time and space for the additional health classes
must be found in other classrooms.
I make these observations in an attempt to keep planning
fundamentals in perspective as fine-tuning of the space
program, which must be supportive of the educational program,
continues to move forward. The planned enrollment of the
school is fully scheduled and the educational program as
established balances to within one scheduled pupil period.
If changes are made to the space program which impact the
balanced educational program, then the educational program
should be adjusted and again brought back into balance.
  GIGCtZ/lu
-2-
