The Commonwealth shall share \ <br /> in construction of school facilities within the following limitations in <br /> gross square footage determined according to t�.- method of computation <br /> contained in 603 CMR 38.04(6)(a) , provided that the square foot costs <br /> per pupil in planned enrollment does not exceed the amounts in 603 CMR <br /> 38.04(6)(c) as modified in 603 CMR 38.04(6)(b) . The Director, School <br /> Facilities Services Bureau, shall have discretion to make reasonable <br /> adjustments in cases where core facilities are planned for numbers in <br /> excess of agreed upon initial planned enrollment. <br /> (5) Square Footage Requirements. The applicant shall assure that any <br /> capital construction project provides adequate and appropriate space to <br /> accommodate early childhood programs as appropriate and studcnts with <br /> special need or linguistic minority students who for lack of space are <br /> not currently served in regular public school facilities. The gross <br /> square footage limits are as follows: <br /> 1 . Elementary Schools - not more than 115 square feet per pupil in <br /> planned enrollment. <br /> 2. Middle Schools/Junior High Schools - not more than 135 square <br /> feet per pupil in gross square footage. <br /> 3. Hi h Schools General or Academic - not more than 155 square <br /> feet er pupil in HE square ootage. <br /> 4. Vocationalca ec nic oo s - not more than 225 square feet <br /> per pupil in gross square footage. <br /> The gross space limitation for vocational technical programs <br /> approved by the Department of Education in a general or academic <br /> secondary school (comprehensive high school) shall be computed by <br /> multiplying the number of approved occupational spaces by the per <br /> pupil square foot allowance for vocational technical schools. <br /> The Department may with the approval of the Board make <br /> reasonable departures from these gross square footage requirements <br /> to accommodate proposed projects, approved after August 1 , 1977, <br /> especially in cases involving additions to, acquisitions of, or <br /> remodeling of buildings where such departures will be consistent <br /> with the intent of these regulations to provide adequate, safe, <br /> cost effective, and creative school projects. <br /> (a) The following are standards for program activities eligible for <br /> state financial assistance for school construction. In the case of <br /> open plan buildings, the Board may permit reasonable variations <br /> from the size of the listed program spaces with adjustment in gross <br /> project allowance where it can be demonstrated that the planning <br /> for such facility reflects good educational practice. Exceptions <br /> may also be made to the following minimum and maximum program <br /> standards in circumstances determined appropriate by the Board of <br /> Education. Special educational spaces will receive special <br /> consideration in the discretion of the School Facilities Services <br /> Bureau and the Division of Special Education, in the Department of <br /> Education, notwithstanding the gross square footage allowances <br /> contained in these regulations. <br /> 16 - <br />
