Instead, the key is a skilled and
sensitive school library media specialist who selects materials and equipment that will meet the needs of the
individuals who will use it. Quantitative standards can serve only as general guidelines because programs of
service vary, and currency and quality are as important as quantity. In addition, the amount of information
available on microfilm and microfiche and through electronic means will greatly affect the needed quantity
of printed materials.
The quantitative standards given below are for programs operating at the three different levels of service.
Print Materials
Minimal Average Exemplary
Level One Level Two Level Three
Elementary
Books 5,000 vols. 8,000 vols. 12,000 vols-
or 12 per student, or 18 per student, or 22 per student,
whichever is greater whichever is greater whichever is greater
Secondary
7,%0 vols 12,000 vols. 20,000 vols,
or 15 per student, or 20 per student, or 24 per student,
whichever is greater whichever is greater whichever is greater
Elementary
I Periodicals,including 5- 10 11 25 26#
i Newspapers Secondary .
20-49 50- 124 125+
Vertical File: Clippings, pamphlets, and other printed items should be kept in a vertical file. These materials
should reflect the interest and grade level of the school.
Audlovlsual Materials and Software
The collection needs a balance between printed and audiovisual materials.Since it is difficult to define what
constitutes individual audiovisual formats and how theyrnay be counted, specificquantitative recommendations
are not easily determined. However, since audiovisual materials are basic to a school library media program, the
following are recommendations for the three levels of service.
I Minimal Average and Exemplary
Level One level Two and level Three
The audiovisual and computer software budgetshould The audiovisual and computer software budget should
be equivalent to 20 to 25 percent of the amount be equivalent to X to So percent of the amount
spent for printed materials, excluding periodicals spent for printed materials, excluding periodicals
The school library media specialist must select the materials that meet the learning styles of the students,
the teaching methodologies of the faculty, and that are appropriate to the curriculum.
Formats for comsideration.include but are not limited to: video cassettes, 16mm films, videodiscs, CD-
ROM, filmstrips, slides, transparencies, records, compact discs, audio cassettes, kits, art prints, photographs,
dioramas,games,puzzles,toys,maps,globes,models,microfilm,microfiche,and microcomputer software.
is d2,
IIS
