DR JOHN A CPLABP.O 6/ 73330992 P. 03
11ear7rine f1eSCarCeS and SUDPCrt
Personnel
For the school library media center to fulfill its potential, it must have an adequate number of qualified
professionals on Its staff. These certified school library media specialists will be responsible for the school
library media center through the direct and indirect roles which were described in the section on the Roles
of Professional and Support Staff: teacher, Information provider, instructional consultant, program manager,
collection developer and manager, and technology manager. To successfully implement these roles, the
school library media specialist must be assisted by clerical and technical aides.
In establishing the schedule of the school library media specialist, there must be a careful balance main-
tained between the time spent in direct instruction and the time required by other professional duties. A
sufficient block of time must be set aside for managerial, consultation, and collection development responsi-
bllities. in addition, the professional staff must have adequate time not just to react, but to reach out and
build creatively. The school library media specialist must be able to delegate the routines of processing,
circulating, and handling of materials and equipment to clerical and technical staff. Thus, as the program
grows to include additional professional personnel, there should be an increased support staff.
In a school system that encompasses two or more schools, there should be a system-wide professional
school library media director who is equal In rank to other system-wide administrators. The specific duties of
the system-level director are described in the section on system-level services.
Minimal Average Exemplary
Level One Standards Level Two Standards Level Three Standards
School library media centers oper- School library media centers func- School fibrary media centers rune-
ating at this level must have at tioning at this level must have one tionirg at Level Three, likethoseat
least one full-time or part-time full-time school library media spe- Level Two,must hAveone full-time
certified professional, Minimal ciatisl for schools of 500 or fewer school library mediaspecialist, one
clerical and technical staff will be students.
