There are two issues the Sewer Commission needs direction from the School Committee:
the town will need area to discharge their treated wastewater. The high school's ballfield area is
ideal. Will the SchoolCommittee allow that as an option in the facilities plan.
- Does the.School Dept want to "give"the Sewer Commission the high school treatment plant (to
own and run).
These discussions started because the School Committee took a vote to turn the plant over the to
Sewer Commission.
Everyone watched the video of the Geo Flow technology -used for underground discharge of
wastewater.
This seems like just an irrigation system.
Tom said the nitrogen, in the wastewater, gets taken up by the grass and it is used to water the
grass/fields.
Ira Brown asked what they mean by treated wastewater?
Tom said the nitrogen level in this treated wastewater is below drinking water standards. There
are no health issues.
Re-claimed water is the correct terminology.
Peter Thomas said this has been a valuable meeting. The School Committee is looking for
information before making any further decisions. They will look over this information, talk
things over and report back to the full school committee.
Tom said if they want to transfer the plant, February is the deadline for May town meeting
articles.
There are also upgrades needed to the plant that need to be resolved.
Tom explained upgrades are being required because the plant is in a well re-charge area, which
has higher standards for level of treatment. The permit expired in 2000.
One option is.to move the discharge outside of the well re-charge area.
Peter Thomas asked if the Water District should be at the table as part of these discussions?
Tom said he is also a Water Commissioner. Water District is working on a long range plan.
They may ultimately decide that well could be abandoned but that has not yet happened.
The DEP is reluctant to give up wells that are already permitted. It takes 5 years to permit a well.
Ira Brown said he sent a variance to the DEP (asked for postponement of increased standards
until the well is actually developed)but has not heard back.
The School Committee left themeeting at this time.
Stearns and Wheler Nitrogen Management Plan.
There are 158 planning zones
In order to decide where to sewer have determined:
-nitrogen load per acre
