Two of the USGS groundwater modeling locations for discharge are the high school ballfields
and town owned Heritage Park fields.
There is no one location in town big enough to handle all the discharge.
Becky asked what happens when repairs needed t
P o be made - under the ballfields?
Matt said with today's technology, using pipes or plastic leaching chambers, the failure rate is
minimal. It is more likely to have a problem at the plant.
Do they foresee the fields having to be dug up many times?
Matt said no. There are inspection"ports"in multiple areas that are monitored.
This is done often on golf courses with much success. If something fails it is usually a small similar
to a sprinkler head.
Peter Thomas asked about potential growth, in order to determine the size of this facility- what
will be tied into it?
Tom said, as part of the facilities plan there is a build out plan for every parcel in town. At this
point, do not know how much discharge will need to go to the ballfields. Do have information
on how much discharge could go there (maximum amount).
It will be one year before the plan is completeofwhat Mashpee's wastewater system should look
like.
There is another model of impact to the Bays and the Sewer Commission will have to test their
model against that model. There is a long way to go before there are any final answers.
At this point, the Sewer Commission needs to know if the ballfields are a possibility, to include
in the plan.
The discharge being discussed will not require a large building(treatment plant) at this site. It is
all discharge coming from elsewhere-another plant.
Becky said her big concern is not being able to use the fields.
Tom said they understand that and know that this cannot close the door on use of the fields for
any season.
Peter asked if there are other parts of the schools land that could be used, that would not effect
the fields?
Tom said cleared, level areasare ideal for discharge. That is why golf courses are used so often.
It is his understanding there is a Conservation Restriction on the majority of the remainder of the
land(from the power lines to Qua shnet River).
Mary Rose Grady reiterated that they are reluctant to disturb the fields and interrupt the school's
activities at any times.
