Box 357
Mashpee, MA A2649
h
Dear Bob:
In accordance with provisions of Chapter 130, sec. 57 of Mass. G.L. , a
survey was conducted on 9-1-76 and 1-76 at the site of the proposed four acre
private shellfish grant of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribal Council Inc.
The proposed grant is located on the northeast side of Daniel's Island in
Popponessett Bay.
Survey of the intertidal area was accomplished by taking 29 square foot
samples between MHW and MLW. A total of 39 legal and 41 sublegal quahogs were
found (80 all told). Average density of quahogs was computed to be 1.3
legals/ft2, 1.4 sublegals/ft2 or a total of 2.75 quahogs/ftp in the inter-
tidal zone. -
A small number of oysters and seed soft-shelled clams were also found in
i
insignificant amounts.
Subtidal sampling was accomplished using a bull rake, tongs and a scallop
t dredge as well as SCUBA gear. Results of the sampling showed the following:
f Quahogs
Random sampling # of sample Adult Seed Total
tongs and bull rake 40 .52/ft2 .04/ft2 .56/ft2
(converted to Ft samples)
The small number of seed quahogs obtained might be accounted for because of
gear selectivity in that while washing, seed would pass through the larger
openings.
Five two-minute tows were made with a scallop dredge resulting in the
following:
fib-
