SHELLFISH GRANT HEARING
j MASHPEE WAMPANOAG INDIAN TRIBAL COUNCIL, INC.
May 18 , 1977, 2 : 00 p.m.
TOWN HALL LOBBY i
4
x Selectmen Kevin D. O'Connell, George A. Benway, Jr. , Robert
A. Maxim and Shellfish Constable Robert Courtemanche present.
i
Selectman Benway read the public notice which appeared in the
May 10, 1977, issue of the Falmouth Enterprise. The heariing
was. then turned over to the Shellfish Constable, Robert
Courtemanche.
Mr. Courtemanche explains the locus area of the Shellfish' Grant,
which is located at Gooseberry Island. The grant will encompass
approximately 4. 6 , acres of inter-tidal water. The adjacent
land mass to Gooseberry Island is Punkhorn Point. The hearing
is to answer any questions .
The Department of Natural Resources, within a few days, will
conduct an inwater survey to see if the designated area is jl
productive with shellfish that would cause an adverse effect
on the natural shellfish beds in Mashpee.
My recommendations to the Selectmen are neutral until all data
is in. Mr. Courtemanche then asked if there were any questions.
D. McCLOUD asked how this area was decided upon and is this
the initial area that was first considered? --
MR. COURTEMANCHE gave an updated brief synopsis explaining that
the Council has money available to hire a Shellfish Aquafarmer.
Now, the Council would like to acquire an area that has no
substantial value to the town. They contacted me and suggested
a couple of areas and this is the area chosen by the Council'
and by the fishermen who will run the grant. His intention is
to seed the area with shellfish, work the area and provide
shellfish for the Council. The grant, upon issuance, is a
license that entitles the holder to use the entitled area for
k the sole purpose of - raising shellfish. It cannot obstruct
Ftp, navigable waterways. I assure you, there will be aquaculture
C traps, bottom seeding. With these things in mind, this area
`> was sought for that use. Under the law, we have to have a
' hearing.
s
D. McCLOUD said he was under the impression that another area
Na was under scrutiny and asked what happened to that area and
I why was it rejected?
E
i
ti
I
