WITC. SHELLFISH GRANT HEARING PAGE 2
5/18/77 i
f
t ,
MR. COURTEMANCHE explained the first area was located on the
northeast side of Daniels Island. A letter from the Department
of Marine Fisheries which contained a rQport of their inwater
x
survey of the species available in the area found it contained i
a natural abundance of shellfish of recreational value.
Because we issue many recreational shellfish permits every year,
this is the reason I did not recommend this area.
The area around Punkhorn Point is of minimal usefor recreational
I shellfish because of location. A boat must be used to reach
this' area.
D. McCLOUD asked how will the people who will harvest this,
area get there?
MR. COURTEMANCHE explained that there is a town-owned landing
on Punkhorn Point.
< D. McCLOUD: . Then they can get to it by car also?
E
MR. COURTEMANCHE: They can get to the landing by car and then
traverse the water by boat. Mr. Courtemanche passed a plan of
the .- area - an outline of Punkhorn Point explaining that the
area encompasses up to the intertidal low water mark, Punkhorn
Point.
f D. McCLOUD asked•if -the small creek running between the- Island
and- Punkhorn Point-was -involved? -
t ryr
MR. -COURTEMANCHE- said -yes.- -
D.
OURTEMANCHE said -yes.- -D. McCLOUD stated that this area is accessible by car along.
MR. COURTEMANCHE: Yes, but the grant itself is worked by boat.
D. McCLOUD asked why this area was different from the area refused
t.
on Daniels Island.
R. COURTEMANCHE: Because of the DOMF assessment of the shellfish
I beds . Again, explained the hearing is for all the people in
f Mashpee after which the findings will be recorded. Then a survey
will be conducted by Department of Marine Fisheries biologist and
$h attach form to that letter for the Selectmen to make their
recommendations .
G. BENWAY: The State has yet to come down in this area to determine
the quantities of shellfish per square foot. The Board turned down
the first grant because the DOMF biologist found an abundance of
shellfish. The idea of a grant is to take a barren area and make
it producing through private enterprise.
R. COURTEMANCHE: The procedure is - hearing first, inwater survey
