Falmouth/Mashpee Town Line in Waquoit Bay—The map/photo of the
Falmouth/Mashpee Town line in Waquoit Bay prepared by Tom Mayo (GIS Dept)
was distributed. The map was constructed by overlaying the 2007 Town aerial
photo on the map of the Town lines in the Barnstable County deed book. Tom is
working on checking the line compass direction heading from the text in the
book. This requires research on the coordinate system used.
New Business:
Shellfish Propagation 2011 —The propagation plan for 2011 is to get
1,000 oyster remote-set spat bags, a million quahog quahog seed and 100,000
scallop seed from the hatchery and grow them in upwellers and trays as usual.
Barnstable County is funding 200 of the oyster spat bags and 200,000 of the
quahog seed again this year.
Quahog seeding/eutrophication mitigation project—The plan is to get
more quahog seed from the hatchery to grow and plant in shellfish growing area
SC-16 (Great and Little Rivers, Hambin and Jehu Ponds) for the purposes of
enhancing the fishery and mitigating eutrophication. The Massachusetts
Estuaries Project (MEP) Report for that area calls for a 4,344 kilograms (kg)
reduction in nitrogen loading per year to meet the Total Maximum Daily Load
(TMDL) for nitrogen. According to the report, more than half of nitrogen load is
coming out of the bottom sediments. Harvest of an additional 2.6 million
quahogs from the area would remove an estimated 434 kg of nitrogen or about
10% of the reduction required based on the estimates of nitrogen content of
littleneck quahogs. The Shellfish Constable is looking for funding for the project.
Shellfish topics for 2011 —Postponed to next meeting
Adjourn meeting: 8:40 PM - Motion to adjourn by Marques, seconded by York.
Vote—unanimous in favor of adjournment.
Respectfully submitted,
Richard York
Shellfish Commission Secretary
Mashpee Shellfish Commission Minutes February 8,2011 —Page 2
