HUNTING IN THE PARK
The Committee members agreed that there have been no issues reported regarding the hunting
activity in the park in the past year.
Lance Lambros made a motion that the Committee approve hunting for another year, unless
any issues arise. Mike Cardeiro seconded the motion. Lewis Newell opposed. The motion was
approved.
Lewis Newell explained his opposition to the motion, stating that he lives on Whippoorwill Circle,
and if a poll were to be taken of his neighbors'feelings about hunting activity in their back yards
he is certain they would oppose, as well. Mr. Newell feels that it is inappropriate to have hunting
so close to a residential area.
PLAQUE UPDATE
Jeri Smith reported that the plaque has not been installed to date. Information received from
both Frank Connelly and Jim Rassman stated that it was not installed last fall because of the
weather. The gate to the beach must be opened in order for Grafton Briggs (formerly Baker
Memorial) to gain access to the site where the plaque is to be installed. Carey Murphy stated
that he will contact Grafton Briggs to try to arrange a time when there will be access to the site,
so that the plaque can finally be replaced.
LETTER TO THE STATE REPRESENTATIVES
Lance Lambros has offered to contact the state representatives urging their support in providing
funding to the State Park for amenities promised 30 years ago, including showers, changing
rooms, bathrooms, picnic tables and sufficient funds to ensure fulltime lifeguard coverage. A
letter will be prepared and forwarded to Lance for this purpose. Lance will invite David Vieira
and Randy Hunt to attend the next South Cape Beach State Park Advisory Committee meeting.
LIFEGUARD COVERAGE
Gus Frederick reported that there will be lifeguard coverage similar to last year, with a couple of
days of no coverage. Gus stated that previously he had talked to Matt Patrick and the Town
Manager about working with the state to ensure that the State Park had full time lifeguard
coverage. Lance Lambros suggested that if in addition to the Town of Bourne announcing that
there will be no lifeguards at their town beach this season, and Brewster and Dennis may follow
suit, then it might be to Mashpee's benefit to get together with these towns to approach the state
to come up with money for lifeguards. Lance stated his feeling that the lifeguard issue in
Bourne is not going to go away.
BICYCLE RACK
Lewis Newell reported that there still is no bicycle rack at the beach. Lance Lambros suggested
that Jeri Smith talk to Town Planner Tom Fudala about any possible mitigation transportation
funds available from the Cape Cod Commission that could be tapped into to provide a bike rack
for the beach.
FIRE PLAN
Lance Lambros stated that every town on the Cape has a fire plan. Mashpee has not had a fire
prevention burn for the past 8 years and is primed for a fire disaster if nothing is done.
NEXT MEETING
2
