' -8-
Dick Terry, cont.
Mashpee River
Now, the situation with this now and this is the river here (pointing to map) and
what she had done out was a 300 foot line which shows here on the map. Now, that
isn't necessarily what we have to do. That was the maximum under the scenic river,
the 300 feet. And with the zoning by-law for the town, we could go from 1 foot to
10,000. Obviously, there is a practical sphere that we are talking about as well
and in talking too about how far down should the thing go. Maybe I should get some
of your feelings about the whole thing.
Barbara: Do you have a copy of the original proposal?
Dick Terryt The original Scenic Rivers proposal?
Barbarao Yes.
Dick Terry: I have something that they drew up.
Barbarat No, I mean the proposal itself.
Dick Terry: Let me just show you what I have. Are you talking possibly about this?
Pauline: No.
Dick Terryc What happened is they sort of feel that they were not welcome, the State,
in dealing with this. Because one.of the main problems with the State coming in is
everyone said that we want local control and we want home rule so that is why they
through it to the Planning Board. And it seems that the Planning Board, hopefully in
conjunction with the Conservation toard, . could maybe co-sponsor something. We could
get something going for this town warrant.
Charles: The most difficult thing before we go heading into it after putting in -all the
time on the Mashpee River Corridor Committee and the thing that disturbed me the most
with thaticommittee, to my knowledge, was the fact that there were no-people on that -com-
mittee that were property. owners, along that section. There were technicians, there-
were conservation commission leaders, the tribal counsel group was invited-and showed up
once and awhile but there was nobody involved that actually owned property along there
that I can remember.
Pauline: They were asked; We had meetings. There were papers and advertising was done
on it. I have a whole folder on it. Not a single one showed up until the petition went
out.
Charles: But the point I'm bringing out is as it was left when we had gone as far as we
had, the last meeting involved everybody in the town. There were somewhere around 90 to
95 people there. The consensus of that meeting; was that the only thing to do with this
river corridor was leave it as much alone as possible. If you wanted to use it, get in
the water and follow it down. Now, as I understand it, from the first two or three and
I guess I went to two before I walked away, when the Scenic River proposal was put in,
all the land owners knocked it down primarily because it meant they were going to loose
control over part of their property. I don't see how we can get any sort of a designation
which in any way goes more than perhaps 50 feet from the bank.
Dick Terry: Are you saying as a practical matter?
