-16-
Pauline: Not unless it is upstairs.
Charles: It might be up there then. Next Wednesday evening, there will be an organiza-
tional meeting for the Water Utilization Committee. What it will be composed of is the
appointment of a member from the conservation commission, the planning board, the board
of health, the selectman's office, one member to be selected from the community and the
representative to the town CCPDE Water Resource Committee to act upon the setting aside
or creation of a water reseree.area for the Town of Mashpee. They told me that they
were going to have a memo already sent down to the Conservation Commission by tonight.
It is something that I would like to see get organized. You should have received copies
of the forms showing the two methods which might be used to create the district. I have
told George that I wanted copies made of information that was in the folder that they
didn't print enough of to distribute showing the reasons why and this sort of thing. I
don't think we have to rush into it. Yet, I think we have to get moving on it.
It brought to mind when I was looking at this Holmes & McGrath thing here and talking of
the nitrate loading. This evidentally has not gone through and will not get through, but
I think that we have got to be aware in any of these things that come before us that we
should be making restrictions on the use of fertilizers on grass areas around these
places restricting the nitrate contents to under 6 lbs. per year. I think that they have
settled on that as a no harm medium. I think, too, when it comes to this that we should
all remember that we should all be thinking of them creating a settling pond with plant
and whatnot in it when it comes to the drains that they use in all of these areas. We
should have that in effect up at the circle at Christie's.
Ken: When they talk about a water shed, 1s that like a pond for town water supply?
Charles No. There has been an area mentioned as being proper and likely up in Whitcomb
swamp which is this side of the runways up at Otis. The question there is that there
might be some contamination from the runways.
Ken: There is a plume coming out of there.
Charles: Yes, that plume is going in the other direction. So, I think that we would be
all right but it is one area that very definitely needs to be studied and looked at be-
cause it would be an area that could supply a section of John's Pond and straight across
to the other side of town.
Ken: Do you ever think you will see the town have a water system?
Charles: Well, rather than a sewer system, we will have a water system. This is the ques-
tion around John 's Pond because the water there is not breaking down so much in its conduc-
tivity or in its salinization but it is showing indications of exceedingly high iron. And
eventually-,that Aron might get so high that it might be worth putting in a water plant to
help the people out.
Paulines When this adhoc committee on the golf course was started, the price was right
for the town to purchase any acre for under approximately $2,Ooo. Where is the highest
water table in this town. It starts at Peter's Pond down through Moody Pond to John's
Pond. That is the highest table into Whitcomb swamp. I was telling Jeannie and I told
Joe Reardon. We were talking about the adhoc and I told them that I was positively against
it. I said that area could be reserved for a water table for a water supply for the town.
Charless It still could even though the golf course would be adjacent.
Paulines It was tested for that many years ago.
Dorothy: The State drove a well many years ago.
