r
MASHPEE HISTORIC DISTRICT STUDY COMNUTTEE
TUESDAY,MAY 16,2006
Members Present: Lee Gurney, Curtis Frye,Gail Slattery, Walter Yarosh
Also Present: Tom Fudala, Ginny Adams, PAL
Members Absent: Chance Reichel, Earl Mills
Vice Chairman Curtis Frye opened the meeting.
Tom gave a brief history of the Committee. It was started about seven years ago and met for
about 2 year. The committee stalled after the assistant town planner left and the town planner
could not keep up with this additional work load.
The Committee previously looked at the PAL report/inventory of buildings greater than 50 years
old.
They proposed two historic districts:
1. Mashpee Center Historic District: Area around town hall up to Heritage Park(ballfields)and
just past the Sturgis residence ("up street").
2. Main Street Historic District: Rte 130 south to Stratford ponds ("down street"). Some of the
structures in this area are now gone.
Earl Mills did a few public walks, starting at upper end of up street and down to Emma Oakley
Mills Drive to showcase the proposed district to residents.
The town has received a grant form Barnstable County to hire a consultant, issued an RFP and
hired PAL.
The goal of the committee now is to make a recommendation on these two suggested districts, or
other locations. The town now has CPA funds and 10%must go to historic preservation. The
Committee can suggest how to spend those funds.
Gail Adams from PAL is pleased to be working on this project along with Holly Herbster,
archeologist at PAL. Holly has also done work with the Wampanoag of Martha's Vineyard .and
a lot of planning work with towns on archeological sites.
PAL completed a review of the information complied to date on archeological sites and historic
buildings, national register listings, historic organizations and cultural resource management
(CPA and Historic District Committee and Historical Commission), State,Federal and Regional
regulations.
Sarah Koff of the Cape Cod Commission sent a comment that National Register sites do get
reviewed by the Cape Cod Commission. (Mashpee's Indian Meetinghouse did not get reviewed
by the Commission).
PAL will discuss tools available to the town, where the town is in the process, any ideas about
changing the proposed boundaries of the districts.
Tom said, given the time that has passed since the districts were proposed, some of the buildings
have fallen into disrepair or are gone.
1
