would be required and the top slab would be wider to create a small landing. Although
exemptions are available to buildings in the historic district, because of the building's public
nature, it was agreed that a railing would ensure better public safety. Ms. Laurent presented a
photo to the Commission depicting a schoolhouse in Connecticut with granite steps and a simple
railing. The other option Ms. Laurent presented was an architectural drawing of a wooden stair.
Although the image depicted three steps and-a landing with railings, Ms. Laurent indicated that
with additional grading, it would eliminate one step. Commission members agreed that the wood
stair changes the character of the building, and looks oversized compared to the building. All
members agreed that the photo from Connecticut represented a modem interpretation of a more
historically accurate step. Mr. Robbins expressed concern that once a handrail is installed, it
may be required to be built to code since it would still be considered a liability. Ms. Laurent will
double check with the Building Department. The Commission agrees that the preferred step
would be the unpolished, clean cut edge, rough faced granite with a CT wood handrail that could
be painted white to match building.trim.
Finally,Ms. Laurent proposed installing ground lighting for purposes of security and uplighting
at the front of the building and on the bandstand side. The Guidelines allow community
buildings to have uplighting if it is less than 1200 watts. Should the lighting exceed 1200 watts,
the lighting plan would need to be approved by the Commission.
Mr. Fudala described the requests related to the one room schoolhouse so that the Commission
could vote on the proposed alterations.
1. Manufactured stone veneer to be individually placed and mortared onto the
foundation,in the style of New England fieldstone.
2. Three unpolished, clean cut edge, rough faced, level granite steps, including a landing,
with a simple hand rail, painted white or as weathered wood, and intermediate rails as
required by the Building Department.
3. uplighting will be subject to review only if it exceeds 1200 watts.
The walkway is not subject to review. `
Motion made by Mr.Robbins to accept Mr. Fudala's statement regarding the schoolhouse
alterations. Motion seconded by Marian Spencer. All voted unanimously.
Other Items:
District Resident IncLniry
Francesco Mayrhofer
302 Main Street
Mr. Mayrhofer has not yet submitted an application, but had questions regarding window
replacement, gutters and the addition of a shed. At present,Mr. Mayrhofer's home has vinyl
windows as well as 70's style louvre windows. He wishes to,change the windows on the front of
the home, maintaining the rough openings,to match the newer vinyl windows, closing in the
porch and updating the heating system. Mr. Robbins indicated that typically double hung
windows would be replaced by double hung, but the"jealousy"windows are difficult to replace.
2
