Town of Mashpee
Historic District Commission
Minutes of Meeting
October 1, 2008
Roll Call:
Present: Earl Mills, Marian Spencer, Wayne Picard, Mike Robbins
Absent: Chairman Lee Gurney, Joe Mullin
Also Present: Town Planner Torn Fudala
The meeting was called to order at 4:47 p.m.
Minutes:
Ms. Spencer made a motion to approve the minutes of September 3, 2008. Motion
seconded by Mr. Robbins. All voted unanimously.
Public Hearing:
Certificate of Appropriateness
Mashpee Town Hall
16 Great Neck Road North
Request -New roofing, dormer and window improvements
Tom Fudala read the public hearing notice for Mashpee Town Hall. Catherine Laurent, Director
of the Department of Public Works, was available to present materials and information regarding
the project. Ms. Laurent and the DPW would like to replace the shingle roof on the 1930's
portion of Town Hall and repair and reconstruct the dormers on the front of the building. The
project is currently out to bid and bids are expected to be received on Friday, October 3. Ms.
Laurent did bring samples to share with the Commission based on their specifications; however,
contractors may suggest different materials in their bids.
The DPW has proposed using a 40 year architectural shingle in a gray color, but will welcome
recommendations from the Commission. The Commission noted that the current roof is a blue,
gray and red blend also known as Chapel Slate and is close to Ms. Laurent's "Slate Blend"
sample. Ms. Laurent indicated that the building was last roofed in 1996 but recently discovered
with some leakage that the roofing may not have been done properly. Mr. Robbins indicated that
in 1996 it was not required to add paper underlayment. The Commission is in agreement that
the 40 year architectural shingle is acceptable, in a shade of dark gray, and Ms. Laurent will
verify with Mr. Robbins the final color selection.
Ms. Laurent also provided a window sample for the dormers but indicated that the actual window
will be 6 over 6 with a flat vinyl casing. Vinyl was selected due to the location of the dormers
high up on the roof and in consideration of future maintenance of the windows. The current
dormer windows are wood. The Commission expressed some concern that the window does not
have a true divided light which would be more historically accurate, such as the "Woodwright"
Anderson windows, a vinyl clad wood window. Mr. Robbins indicated that, provided a flat
casing is used, vinyl would be acceptable since the windows will be located up high and are in an
unfinished attic area. Upon further inspection of the existing Town Hall windows, it is agreed by
1
