4
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
February 27, 2017
Public Comment: (continued)
In closing his comments, Mr. McKelvey stated it is incumbent for the Town of Mashpee to put the
technical school matter before the voters to make the decision. Mr. McKelvey added he is appreciative
of the hard work the Board of Selectmen do for the town.
Yvonne Courtney, a retired high school teacher and resident since 1974 expressed appreciation to the
Board of Selectmen in trying to find the task to fund the technical school project. Mrs. Courtney stated
she is in agreement with the town in attempting to limit the cost of the school. However, it is
important to realize there are senior citizens who support the importance of this project. Mrs. Courtney
indicated the value of a technical school education should not be underestimated. Young people
cannot afford to live in Mashpee because they cannot afford to make a living. If the Selectmen reach
out and make a good case to the Town, the Town will support their efforts.
Ahmad Molin a 2009 graduate of the Cape Cod Technical School noted he was a former student in the
automotive technology program and has lived on the Cape since 2004. Mr. Molin informed the Board
he is not from this country and at an early time he was forced to grow up quicker than most children.
The Cape Cod Technical School has given Mr. Molin valuable life lessons. Mr. Molin noted he was
impressed at the number of careers he could select from. The teachers and staff members were very
helpful during his transition. At the time of graduation, Mr. Molin indicated he had options to go to
college or to take on a career. Mr. Molin chose the option to go to college and attended Merrimack
College. Governor Baker was noted to be investing more in the technical education and lastly Mr.
Molin indicated it is vital to the state that we educate students in this type of way.
Leah Rogers a resident of Marstons Mills stated she has a son who is now a senior at the technical
school studying plumbing. He is a 17th generation Cape Codder. At the age of seventeen her son
purchased his own car and is now saving to buy a home. Mrs. Rogers stated that Barnstable High
School was not the right choice for her son, and he is fortunate to have the technical school and the
education it has to offer. Mrs. Roger indicated her son has gained confidence, he is a part of the
community and the work he is now doing with Riedell Plumbing is significant. Mrs. Rogers indicated
college is not for all students, and she is grateful her son will be working full time when he graduates.
Cammy, an auto tech student at the Cape Cod Technical School stated that she wanted to obtain a
different type of education that was trade related. She explained it is important for students to have a
choice and to learn people skills and to be trained in gaining employment opportunities. Noting that it
is a far commute to the school, it is well worth the time. Cammy also stated her sisters are interested in
attending the technical school and it is hopeful the Board of Selectmen will contribute to this project.
