OUTREACH COORDINATOR'S REPORT
June 2011
HOME VISITS/APPOINTMENTS
Twenty-nine were made this past month, in addition to client contact by telephone.
I met with seniors who were having disagreements with the neighbors, to discuss strategies to
resolve over their issues, their rights, and how to manage the accompanying stress. In these
cases, I also discussed the role of professional mediation. .
I met family members who were concerned about their loved ones with mental illness, and who
were unable to persuade their loved ones to accept psychiatric care. I discussed NAMI'S family
support group, the elder protective services law,the role of the police in crisis situations, section
12 law, etc.
1 met with several seniors experiencing significant financial problems and/or in desperate need of
safe and affordable housing. I am increasingly concerned about elders with criminal records
and/or poor references who are not eligible for public housing and thus have almost no housing
options.
VOLUNTEERS
I continue to meet with the telefriend, SHINE, friendly visitor assistant, grief support, birthday
flower delivery, and biography volunteers, to provide supervision, and to assign clients.
I trained a new mailing list update volunteer, a new driver, and a new friendly visitor.
MEETINGS/CONTACTS
I and other staff from the Town met with Elizabeth Alpert, Human Services Director, Barnstable
County, and Steve Joachim of the Department of Mental Health. We discussed working
collaboratively to address middle aged men at risk of committing suicide.
I attended the CIRCA meeting and training on substance abuse, and at that meeting I brought up
for discussion the problem of elders operating under the influence, and who refuse help such as
counselling.
I met with Chris Morin of Independence House, and I requested that her agency do a
presentation on safety planning related to domestic violence.
I attended the monthly meeting of the town's housing task force, and the monthly meeting of the
Cape Outreach Coordinators.
Finally, I met with new Mashpee Village residents coordinator, Karen Ryan.
Respectfully Submitted,
Lynne Waterman
LFW/Icw
