teachers may be involved with the project. Ms. Rhoden excused herself from the remainder of the
meeting.
Ms. Farren also shared that Marilyn Rollins has resigned. Ms. Rollins had hoped to be more involved
with Affirmative Action issues and hoped that the Committee would be a resource for people with
concerns in the community.
Mashpce High School Senior Project Exposition:
The Committee received a letter from Superintendent Ann Bradshaw regarding the Mashpee High
School Senior Project. Each year, seniors are required to work on a project. The Exposition will be
held on October 8, 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
The No Place for Hate Program requires that the town participate in two activities each year in order to
maintain its certification. The first activity was the Committee's participation in the Town Picnic.
Another idea would be to have a table at the Oktoberfest, for the full day,on October 11. Maryanne
Wray expressed interest in attending Oktoberfest. Three years ago, members of the Board of
Selectmen and Committee members attended the event throughout the day. Ms. Farren recommended
this event be considered again for next year.
Karen Murphy expressed interest in the Exposition, setting up a table with No Place for Hate brochures
and being available to answer questions. Katherine Brown and Ms. Farren would be available to
attend the event. Ms. Farren also noted that Ms. Rhoden had drafted a"Resolution of Respect'and
will check into whether or not this would be an appropriate venue for that document.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Questions:
Paul Perry, attending the meeting with interest about possibly joining the Committee, had some
questions regarding the No Place for Hate Program. Ms. Farren described the program as a state
organization sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League. The town of Mashpee was initially invited to
sign a Proclamation of Respect in 2001 and commit to promoting activities that support the program
throughout the year. There have been some challenges in maintaining membership within the
Affirmative Action Committee which did result in loss of certification. The certification has since
been reinstated and been in place for the last two years.
The Committee is obligated to offer two activities each year, but not restricted to offering only two.
The goal of the Committee is to generate program ideas, utilizing guidelines from the Anti-Defamation
League that provides examples of projects. Once the Committee has identified a project, they seek
approval from the ADL before hosting the program. The Committee can then recruit volunteers, such
as students,to assist with running the activity.
The Affirmative Action Committee is also an impartial sounding board for municipal employees in
case of any grievance. The Committee would review the facts and listen to witness statements.
No Place for Hate Presence in the Schools:
Ms. Wray added that there is a real need have the No Place for Hate Program present in the high
school. An incident regarding denigrating language occurred at the school, and was not taken
seriously, which resulted in a teacher feeling the necessity to leave the position. The Resource Officer
did not learn of the event until one week later. There was no follow up training or language that
occurred within the student body. Ms. Wray also noted that there is a very active Diversity Club at the
2
