" l
project like this in town and that it will generateress coverage locally P g y as well as statewide through the
Anti-Defamation League's (ADL)monthly newsletter.
Regarding funding, Ms. Farren described the grant process with the ADL which occurs in September.
Should local organizations and businesses be contacted for donations during the mural project, Ms.
Farren suggested that they also be invited to consider offering snatching funds toward a grant for
September 2009. In exchange, the Committee discussed the possibility offering ad space on one side
of the mural or to create a separate banner featuring the names of donating businesses. Ms. Farren
suggested Ms. Fernandes contact the Committee should she be in need of funds to assist with the
project. The greatest expense may be the purchase of wood. Ms. Brown felt that if funds were needed,
local businesses should be contacted for donations and she would be willing to assist. Ms. Farren
indicated that some companies have been identified in the past for possible donations such as Roche
Brothers,Mashpee Commons, Sovereign Bank and 99. Ms. Vaughn added that the mural could be
installed at any location donating to the project. In 2000, when the town committed to supporting the
No Place for Hate program, a Proclamation was circulated throughout the community for signatures.
Ms. Farren has the list of signers, some of whom may be contacted for donations.
The Committee asked about the contest previously discussed to generate ideas. Ms. Fernandes felt that
ince Ms. Peary has already expressed interest in the project, she would use the contest idea only if
ceded to generate additional ideas. For the next meeting, Ms. Fernandes will create a layout and draft
phrases and slogans to be considered for the mural.
Challenge Day:
Celeste Reynolds, a teacher at the high school and advisor for the Challenge Day program, was unable
toatwill contact Ms Farren with additional information l rw a c 01 9 k r.
tonight'snd g Y ' ,l ___... Ms. Reynolds
, but has forwarded a brochure about the program
for the Committee to review and recommended reviewing the program's website at
- ": +11 :t, fay, °dry. According to the brochure, the purpose is"to provide students in their
community with experiential workshops and programs that demonstrate the possibility of love and
connection through the celebration of diversity, truth and full expression." Due to fundraising efforts,
the entire high school will participate in the program December 16-19. Ms. Vaughn will be assisting
by offering a concurrent program for those students who have opted out of the program or are excluded
from participating, creating a memorable experience, but not as intense. Challenge Day will need
community assistance in the form of facilitators, help with registration and nametags or speakers for
Ms. Vaughn's program.
Ms. Farren described the"Resolution of Respect" created by a Committee Member intended for high
school seniors. Ms. Farren suggested that attendees could sign the document as a meaningful addition
to Challenge Day. Ms. Vaughn and.Ms. Fernandes indicated that it is a very emotional week, but the
feeling tends to fade and there needs to be some sort of follow-up. The Committee discussed the
possibility of using the resolution to follow up and refresh the memories of participating students. Ms.
Farren will email the document to Ms. Reynolds.
Affirmative Action Rale:
Ms. Farren distributed the Town of Mashpee Affirmative Action Policy. Ms. Farren also has copies of
the No Place for Hate Community Resource Guide for anyone interested in reviewing the materials.
2
