Town of Mashpec
Affirmative Action Committee
Meeting Minutes
January 27,2009
Present: Marilyn Farren, Katherine Brown, Paul Perry, Deborah Vaughn
Also Present: Cassie Fernandes
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting commenced at 5:40 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES:
Motion made by Ms. Brown to accept the minutes of November 18, 2008. Motion seconded by
Mr. Perry. All voted unanimously.
AGENDA ITEMS;
Appointment:
Deborah Vaughn has been appointed to the Affirmative Action Committee.
Challenge Day Report:
Maryanne Wray had planned to report on Challenge Day but was unable to attend tonight's meeting
due to illness. Although Deborah Vaughn was not involved with the event this year, she did note that
the freshman class had to have their session condensed due to weather and the necessary early
dismissal. Marilyn Farren will ask Ms. Wray to share her report at the Committee's next meeting.
Wall Mural Update:
Cassie Fernandes shared her rough draft sketch of the mural with members of the Committee. Ms.
Fernandes envisions the mural to depict a tree with extending roots titled"Equality is the Root of
Happiness." Ms. Fernandes suggested peace signs on the tree trunk and Paul Perry recommended
depicting peace signs from a variety of different countries and cultures, which will encourage added
discussion among the viewing public. It was discussed among the Committee members that research
could be conducted on line to locate and identify peace signs from other areas. The Committee also
discussed adding symbolic words to each of the roots of the tree. Ms. Fernandes will have student
Alyssa Perry and friends from the AP Art Class assist with the painting on a tri-fold wooden screen,
which she hopes to have donated by the Mill Store. It was recommended that Ms. Fernandes could
seek donations at additional locations and Ms. Brown offered her assistance. Ms. Farren also stated
that if she is unable to have some of the supplies donated, it may be possible to seek some funds from
the Town Manager. Since this is Ms. Fernandes Senior Project, she will be required to complete most
of the project on her own. Senior Project Presentations will take place on Tuesday, March 17 in the
cafeteria at the high school. Students are present to answer questions about their project and the
Enterprise will be in attendance to report on the event. Ms. Farren noted that the Randolph project
included a description about the event in which it was unveiled and Ms. Vaughn stated that Ms.
Fernandes' senior notebook would do the same. Ms. Farren indicated that she would like to seek out
additional assistance regarding press coverage from Myriam Zuber, Executive Director of No Place for
Hate program.
