A number of great facilitators, representing all aspects of the town, participated in the event with the
students and served as wonderful resources. The Chair felt that at the end of the program, issues were
left hanging with no follow up plan and liked the idea of addressing the next step and as a reminder of
to how to act through the various challenges of life. There currently is no Big Sister/Big Brother
program in Mashpee but Ms. Farren will check with the town's Leisure Services to see if a mentoring
program currently exists. Ms. Vaughn cautioned about liability issues of mandated reporting and other
possible legal issues. It was questioned if the School Council also includes an affirmative action role
to which Ms. Farren responded that the Superintendent acts as an Affirmative Action Officer. It was
discussed that developing some sort of mentoring program, such as peer counseling, might be a good
senior project for next year. Ms. Vaughn indicated that students are sensitive to one another and may
be able to reach out to one another as a resource. Ms. Vaughn often links personal problem solving
with lessons in school, such as when studying Shakespeare.
Multi-Cultural Festival:
The event will be taking place at Cape Cod Community College on Saturday, March 7. Ms. Farren
distributed information about the festival to Committee members. It was discussed that the event be
considered for credit next year with the ADL.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Special Olympics:
Ms. Farren is going to discuss the Special Olympics as a possible activity with the ADL. The Special
Olympics will occur at Mashpee High School on May 29 with the opening ceremonies beginning at
9:30. Two hours of activities will follow along with lunch for the participants. Ms. Vaughn has
invited local entertainers, the Police Chief, bagpipers and the cheering squad from Sandwich. Ms.
Vaughn is also hosting a tent for Best Buddies and has been working toward membership in the
national Best Buddies organization. Ms. Vaughn has many activities planned along with a number of
volunteers involved. A group of 12 students have chaired the event.
MEETING ADJOURNMENT:
The next meeting will be on Tuesday,March 24 at 5:30 in Conference Room 2.
The meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Te er M. Ch or
Board Secretary
3
