and No Place for Hate at joint meetings. Barnstable Human Rights Commission provides support to
the entire Cape and solves problems before going to court or the Massachusetts Commission Against
Discrimination, saving both money and time. It was discussed that MACD provides excellent training.
Ms. Farren asked Mr. Spivey about the possibility of hosting joint No Place for Hate activities.
Falmouth is currently working on creating a newsletter. Falmouth also had plans to host Bill Overton
to discuss messages and images in the newspaper, but matching funds are needed to be eligible for the
grant so the program has been postponed. The graphic arts department at the school will be creating a
series of posters for No Place for Hate to be posted around the school. Students have been a great and
creative resource. Today Mr. Spivey sponsored a power lunch for students that featured 5 or 6,positive
role models of color, with 45 students in attendance. The program encourages kids to pursue their
goals. Ms. Vaughn discussed the Special Olympics event in Mashpee on May 29. The Committee
alsotalked briefly about Challenge Day.
Mr. Spivey expressed interest in pursuing a joint activity and invited the Committee members to attend
any of his meetings at the School Administrative building in Falmouth, which are held on the first
Tuesday of each month at 4 pm and 5 pm. Mr. Spivey can be contacted by email at
g"5ok/ey(" kthk]23nLUS. Chairwoman Wray plans to attend the meeting next week.
-----------
Wall Mural Update:
Ms. Fernandes was unable to find a 3 piece screen so she and her dad have been working on building
one. At present, she is sanding the wood to prep it for white paint. Ms. Fernandes discovered a peace
sign made of flags but also found a world peace chart that seems to focus more on religion. The
Committee liked the peace sign of flags. Ms. Fernandes also located a peace sign with a dove. Friends
from the AP Art Class will assist Ms. Fernandes with laying out the design. Ms. Farren contacted the
Anti-Defamation League for pre-approval of the project. A copy of the Ms. Fernandes' sketch was
submitted along with a summary of the project. A pre-approval letter was received back from Myriam
Zuber,Project Director of No Place for Hate program. Now that the project has been approved, the
Committee can pursue media coverage about the project and event. Ms. Farren shared the information
with the Board of Selectmen, which included a summary that could be used as a press release. Ms.
Vaughn suggested that media coverage be delayed until one week before the event. Ms. Farren
suggested that the No Place for Hate aspect of the project could be treated separate from the Senior
Project event. Ms. Farren will contact Brian Curl at the Enterprise to seek coverage for the town side
of the No Place for Hate project. Ms. Vaughn suggested to Ms. Fernandes that she document the
production of the screens with photos detailing each stage. Ms. Fernandes indicated that she will bring
each individual section to school and store it in the art room where she can use the school's supplies
and it will be painted. Ms. Fernandes used supplies at home for the initial construction and painting.
Senior Project Presentations will take place 6-8:30 pra on Tuesday, March 17 in the cafeteria at the
high school. Committee members will plan to attend the event.
Challenge Day Report:
Chairwoman Wray distributed a report about Challenge Day, which was also sent to the Anti-
Defamation League. Credit will not be received for the event unless there is some sort of follow up
activity such as having students sign the one page Resolution for Respect. Committee members
discussed sharing the Resolution with the Principal and having students sign it. Ms. Vaughn will
follow up with Celeste Reynolds, a teacher at the high school and advisor for the Challenge Day
program. Ms. Farren will forward a copy of the Resolution to Ms. Vaughn to share with Ms.
Reynolds. Ms. Vaughn suggested the possibility of making announcements about the Resolution and
work with the Diversity Club to create posters and have students sign the document. The Chair felt it
would be a good idea to develop a mentoring program, much like Mr. Spivey's position in Falmouth.
2
