16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, Massachusetts 02649
Telephone - (508) 539-1400
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Meeting—December 23, 2016
The Town of Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order in the Archives 10:10 am by
Nancy Soderberg, Chairperson.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello,Rosemary Burns Love,Brian Hyde, and Nancy Soderberg.
Commissioners not Present: Joan Tavares-Avant and Gordon Peters.
First order of business was to approve Minutes from both our June 16'and July 13'meetings. Rosemary
made a motion to accept the Minutes of the June 16th Meeting, and that motion was seconded by Brian
Hyde. Ava Costello made a motion to accept as read the Minutes of the July 131 Meeting_,and that
motion was seconded by Nancy Soderberg,
We regretfully accepted Frank Lord's Letter of Resignation from both the Mashpee Historical
Commission and the Community Preservation Committee, effective December 1,2016. Frank Lord took
on many roles in the Town of Mashpee and devoted his time and efforts to support causes that prospered
under his many hours of dedication and hard work. Frank and his wife,Betsy, loved the Town of
Mashpee—and that feeling was deeply reciprocated. We all will miss not seeing them around town as
they have moved to West Yarmouth,MA,
We were so fortunate to have Frank direct a very informative program for the 31d grade students in
Mashpee, visiting at the One Room Schoolhouse, and also in cooperation with the Mashpee Wampanoag
Indian Museum, visiting the Museum too. Frank plans to continue working on that very successful
program in the spring of 2017.
Since Brian Hyde volunteered to serve as the Mashpec Historical Commission representative on the
Community Preservation Committee,we nominated and seconded his appointment effective immediately.
Old Business: Leslie Morse,an attorney, has made several visits to the Archives over the summer and
fall of 2016. She is researching the Cyrus Cahoon maps—there were 3 of them. We have an 1877
Cahoon map of Mashpee hung on our right side wall, but it does not have all the information she is
looking for. The significance of this map is that it shows how the land in Mashpee was divided and given
to the inhabitants of the town. The lighting in our building on a dark day was inadequate for her to gat a
clear picture of it. On a bright day the sun shines through the window on the opposite side of the
building, which also makes it impossible to get a good picture. It might be a good idea to see if we could
get stronger lighting in some of the hanging lights installed in the building.
