5
Finance Committee
Minutes
December 15, 2016
COMMUNICATION& CORRESPONDENCE
Discussion reggrdin,g,Grant Writer:
To offset budgetary constraints, the Finance Committee discussed the benefits of employing a
grant writer to assist the town in securing grants. In response to this discussion,Town Manager
Rodney C. Collins commended several Department Heads including Police, Fire,DPW and
Conservation who have individually pursued and secured grant funding over the years.
It was noted that a full or part-time grant writer adds to the payroll, which can significantly
impact the budget. It was agreed that grant writing is a good example of privatization. The
position could be similar to a subcontractor without benefits. Some towns share this role, and
other communities use an intern for this function. It was agreed that grant writing is an
important component. In further determining methods to increase revenue in the town without
raising property takes, the use of an experienced person in economic development and business
would be effective and advantageous in supporting the town's endeavor to increase revenue
initiatives.
UPCOMING FINANCE COMMITTEE MEETINGS
Thursday,January 19, 2017 -tentative
ADJOURNMENT
Motion made by Mr. Pettengill to adjourn at 7:09 p.m.
Motion seconded by Mr.DelPonte.
VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0.
Roll Call Vote:
Mr. Avis,yes Mt.
