Mashpee Sewer Commission <br />Minutes of Meeting <br />September 15, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. <br />Mashpee Town Hall <br />Approved 3-0-1 on 11.117116 <br />Sewer Commissioners Present: Tom Fudala, Bradford Pittsley, Tom Burns, Joseph Lyons, <br />Also: Anastasia Rudenko—GHD, Sheldon Gilbert—Community Advisory Committee <br />Absent: Glenn Santos <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />The meeting was called to order by Chairman Tom Fudala at 7:03 p.m. <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES—April 14, 2016, May 19, 2016 & ,lune 16, 2016 <br />Minutes were postponed <br />SHELLFISH PROGRAM UPDATE <br />Acting Director of the Department of Natural Resources, Rick York, reported that the water <br />restoration project was doing very well with oysters and quahogs, in large numbers and growing <br />very well. The facilities were being expanded to grow more. Four million oyster seed and -five <br />million quahog seed were grown in the hatchery. Mr. York referenced the Town's Mashpee <br />River project, placing 2,480 bags of spat in the River. Mr. York also announced that the <br />Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe acquired_ an EPA grant of just under $200,000 to restore oyster beds <br />in Shoestring Bay, a project initiated this year. The Tribe placed 2,000 bags of spat this year in <br />Shoestring Bay. Mr. York noted that the oysters grew very quickly over a month, due to the <br />food growing in the bay. Survival rates were expected at 30-50%. Numbers were anticipated at <br />the end of the year. Mr. York described the process of placing the spat and shellfish. Mr. York <br />thanked :the Commission for identifying Shoestring Bay as a potential site as it has proven to be <br />the best site in town. Mr. York noted that quahogs were doing well in Little River. <br />Regarding water quality monitoring, Mr. York reported that Brian Howes would be discussing <br />the results at the Selectmans meeting on September 23. Additional projects include the SMaST <br />shellfish and water quality effects and the Moonakis River study monitoring the tidal cycle. Mr. <br />York reported that the new Natural Resources Department had been established in July. <br />Assistants have been hired and college students assisted the Department during the summer. <br />Mr. York planned to expand the shellfish program next year. This year's budget for the Natural <br />Resource Department was $517,000, reduced fiom the requested $750,000. Mr. York will <br />review this year's costs to determine his budget needs for next year. <br />STATUS OF FINAL PLAN <br />Status of DRI Review -Extended to November 18, 2016 <br />STATUS OF OTHER TASKS <br />-Mashpee Commons/Wampanoag Village Sewer Connections Study <br />Anastasia Rudenko was present from GHD to provide an update and discuss the feasibility <br />studies assessing the additional flow to the Wampanoag and Mashpee Commons facilities. Ms. <br />Rudenko will focus today on the Wampanoag facility and distributed a handout. The study area <br />is located in Phase 1, slated for Site 4.
