I,
(NEW BUSINESS, cont'd)
The boardwalk is in good shape, with only a few boards to be replaced. The changing buildings are
standing and are in good shape. There are now four bathrooms, with cleaning scheduled 3 times per
week. There are 5 openings for lifeguards and as of this date there are no confirmed applicants. John
Singleton stated that he has a couple of feelers out; he has been to all the high schools and distributed
pamphlets, and is in hopes to get as many as five guards by the opening date.
Mr. Singleton reported that over the winter the lock and pin to the Will's Work Road gate were stolen and
must be replaced - something that happens every year. The condition of the Will's Work Road is pretty
much the way it was prior to the work done on it last year. The hiring of new staff is going on, and
hopefully by mid-June they will be up to full staff. Tickets will go on sale on Father's Day weekend in
June.
John Singleton reported on the price increase of tickets this year for all Mass. State parks. Day passes
will go from $7.00 per day to $12.00 for Massachusetts residents and $14.00 for non-state residents.
Senior pass fees will now cost $10.00 for a one time purchase, with no charge after that. Season passes
also increased from $35 to $60 for Massachusetts residents, and $45 to $85 for non-state residents. The
charge for adding a second vehicle to an annual pass is now $25. John Singleton stated that fees have
increased across the board state-wide, with the National Seashore the exception. The additional revenue
generated from these fee increases will further help the agency to maintain the park system.
John Singleton reported on the entirely new DCR higher echelon leadership. There is a new Secretary
for Energy & Environment; a new Commissioner, Carol Sanchez, with Deputy Commissioner Matthew
Peak.
• Wilt's Work Road
Jeri Smith reported on receipt of an email from State Representative David Vieira, recommending that a
request be made from the South Cape Beach State Park Advisory Committee to schedule a meeting with
the Chairman of the Executive Office of Energy and Environment (EOEE) to advocate for the Will's Work
Road project being included in the Capital Plan. Mr. Vieira will put in a request to the Secretary's office, if
the Committee is interested in scheduling such a meeting. The committee members were unanimous in
favor of such a meeting. John Singleton and Jeri Smith both agreed to attend such a meeting, with other
Committee members welcome to attend as well. Jeri Smith will contact David Vieira to request that he
set up a meeting date with the EOEE for the SCB committee representatives. John Singleton
commented that regarding Will's Work Road, the first concern is the condition of the road itself, with
parking and beach upgrade to follow.
• Hunting in the Park
Jeri Smith explained that technically, hunting is not one of the approved uses of the Park under the
Charter, and therefore a vote by the SCB committee is required to approve hunting, as long as there were
no issues reported during the past year. John Singleton stated that no issues have been reported in the
past year regarding hunting in the park.
Mike Cardeiro made a motion that the Committee continue approval of hunting in the Park for the coming
year. Robert Lancaster seconded the motion. The motion was approved by a vote of(4-1-3) with Bill
Martiros voting no, 3 members absent.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 5 PM, Mashpee Town Hall.
2
