The Committee reviewed and discussed these materials.
Questions/Suggestions Posed by Committee
• Richard Elrick–check with New Bedford Waste Services to see if cost benefit for
cardboard included in recyclabies. Catherine said she will explore options for single
stream recyclables when current contract ends. He also said Barnstable requires a
recycling sticker at no charge and that gives Barnstable a lot of information. Catherine
will look into this.
• Kalliope Egloff possible to co-mingle with another town that hauls to reduce
transportation costs? Catherine said it would depend on their collection method.
Mashpee single stream in compactor.
• Geoff Gorman—What about Upper Cape Regional? Catherine said as of now, they are
closed. 4 towns(which includes Mashpee)looking at what,if anything, can be done.
Feasibility study to be done.
• Andrew McKelvey—any way to limit trash amount being dumped? For instance, limit
of, say, 5 bags. Catherine
said when restrictions set by Selectmen, then meeting to be held with contractor and spell
out expectations for enforcement.
• Geoff Gorman raised question whether it was the purpose of this Committee to make
recommendations adjust policies and thus should be involved in policy to change number
of bags. Mike Richardson said that what we've been talking about in this Committee and
Board of Selectmen regarding abuse is what lead to Selectmen now considering bag
limitation. A motion was made and later rescinded to make 5-bag recommendation to
Selectmen. Instead consensus was reached agenda to include summary of items and state
review and vote.
• Kalliope suggested that waste ban should be addressed by the Committee.
Discussion
Mike Richardson noted that focus still has to be on education and he again asked if anyone in the
group would participate in this effort. Mike said he went to the schools and spoke with the Junior
and Senior Student Council regarding an educational program. Mike said he also spoke with
Mashpee Enterprise about doing a column.
Next Meeting...5 p.m.,Monday,April 13,2015 at Town Hall.
Adiournment
Tom O'Hara motioned to adjourn the meeting; the motion was seconded by Wayne
BevAcqua; and was unanimously passed.
