Review Transfer Station Survey Results(Continued)
+ Town and Committee will learn a lot from this survey. There are good comments offered
by survey respondents.
+ Survey confirms demographics DPW was aware of already—for example, that most were
2-person households. Catherine Laurent suggested it would be beneficial if
SurveyMonkey program could match number of bags per trip and how does that correlate
to how many trips the respondent makes. Also, try to match households to the number of
bags.
+ 94.21%of the respondents answered they recycle. The Committee was impressed with
this percentage. Richard Elrick noted that this response doesn't show how much
recycling is done-----merely shows how many using the Transfer Station recycle. Tom
Murphy agreed with Rick that this doesn't address the tonnage. Tom Murphy said in
talking with folks and experience of his own household he doesn't recycle much at all
and everything else goes into trash. Tom Murphy said information is valuable but we
have to be objective in how we read the data and use the data as we move forward and be
open-minded. He said he could do a lot more to get his household on board. Kalliope
said Paul Quinn has created a curriculum of fun ways to engage family in recycling.
+ Tom Murphy said one of the objectives of the Town is to educate the public. We need to
do complete job on how to properly use Transfer Station and properly use single stream.
+ Mashpee in 20+tonnage of recycling; national average is mid-30's. Tom O'Hara said
then Mashpee is low compared to national average.
+ Tom O'Hara said he was surprised to see number of large size bags reported in question
3. Kalliope said it would be beneficial to see compared against age group. She said it
would be informative to see age/trips to Transfer Station/household/bags.
• Glenn Santos asked Catherine if she had all the numbers reported to DEP, including yard
waste, refrigerators, mattresses, etc. Catherine responded"yes"and said she will bring to
next meeting. Glenn said the Committee and residents need to know DPW reports
numbers per capita. Catherine said the numbers she reports for Town only what's
collected at the Transfer Station, not per capita.
uestion from Audience
Richard Vigeant, 157 Leisure Green in Southport, asked what was the experience in dealing with
residents regarding Transfer Station and separating recyclables. Catherine Laurent explained that
at the end of 2009 single stream was incorporated because the number one complaint was patrons
had to separate recyclables into different materials. In an effort to increase recycling,Mashpee
went to single stream and it is mechanically sorted. Mr. Vigeant was interested in this so
Catherine suggested he Google to see the sorter. He was impressed.
Survey Results...
• Returning to the survey results,Tom O'Hara said Question 7 listed the most
comments...totaled 544. Tom Murphy said he would like to see the Committee review at
the next meeting those comments that might give us a better idea of what could be done
to improve. Glenn Santos agreed and said all the comments will be an excellent tool for
Town. He said it shows how well people are treated; suggestions were made to have a
"swap shop". These are the things we need to know.
• Kalliope said putting comments shows people want their voice heard. She said it makes
her excited that people want to be part of the dialogue.
2
