Recommendations/Suggestions of Waste Management Committee continued
Tom Murphy-Nothing beyond last meeting comments. Tom Murphy asked how Committee
recommendations to be presented to the Board of Selectmen. Tom O'Hara said he will take the
information to the Board of Selectmen.
Rodngy Collins
• Has concerns of costs of transfer station long-ten n. He said it is going to have to be
addressed.
• Chief Collins said everybody here brought something to the table. Recommendations are
constructive and in good faith. The hope is that in moving forward we do a little better.
He said 5 bag limitation is something and overall something is better than nothing.
• Chief Collins and Board of Selectmen Chairman visited the transfer station and saw a
non-Mashpee commercial vehicle access the transfer station with a residential sticker.
He said that does raise a red flag.
KalliopeEloff–In Kalliope's absence from this meeting, Tom O'Hara noted the
recommendations Kalliope made at the last meeting regarding offering more education on
recycling;recommending PAYT;transfer station to be an enterprise fund operation;reduce solid
waste load; and that she did not agree on cameras since that was not part of the goals.
Chief Collins pointed out for operational purposes with regard to the cameras that does not
prohibit the administration from doing what is necessary for purposes of complying with auditing
recommendations for cameras at the booth, which has nothing to do with this Committee. The
Committee agreed.
Catherine Laurent–Supports PAYT; supports Enterprise fund system.
Wayne BevAcqua–Recommends the 5-40 gallon bag limitation that was already approved by
this Committee for submission to the Selectmen.
Tom O'Hara–As suggested at last meeting, the transfer station should have big, block letter
signage to point out recyclables------for example, bottles; paper;cardboard.
Motions on Recommendations to be Submitted to Board of Selectmen
Low-Income Sticker
Motion: Tom O'Hara motioned to establish a low-income transfer station sticker with cost to be
set by the Board of Selectmen. Glenn Santos seconded this motion.
Discussion: Catherine Laurent clarified that the sticker price for rest of the population would
have to go up to subsidize the low-income sticker. The Committee agreed, but said it would be
up to the Board of Selectmen to decide—the Committee is just making the recommendation and
it would be up to Board of Selectmen whether to proceed and, if so, amount of reduction.
VOTE: 8-Yes. Unanimous.
Roll Call Vote:
Catherine Laurent–yes Andrew McKelvey-yes
Tom Murphy--yes Glenn Santos-yes
Rodney Collins–yes Richard Elrick–yes
Tom O'Hara---yes Wayne BevAcqua–yes
2
