TOWN OF MASHPEE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT COMMITTEE MINUTES
NOVEMBER 12, 2009
Members present: Bob Wooldridge, Beverly Wooldridge, William Dundon, Charles Maintanis,
Terrie Cook, Trish Parolski, Marilyn Farren, Mert Sapers, Maria Hortaridis (the newly hired
School Business Manager).
Minutes: The Minutes of September 10, 2004 were moved as corrected by Bev Wooldridge,
seconded by Mert Sapers. Unanimous.
Town Meeting: The Town Meeting was successful. Stephanie Farrell provided CART (closed
captioning system). She has the capacity to make a recorded copy. Debbie Dami, the Town
Clerk, can answers questions about this. A large print warrant was made available, and several
people used them. Many thanks to Kathleen Moore for helping with CART,parking, opening
doors, and preparing the warrant. Terrie Cook and Wayne Taylor made the recording of the
warrant. It was posted on the web site, as well as, audio stream version. Next time, CD's will be
available rather than audios.
Octaherfest. This Town event went well. Parking arrangements were made in advance. Mert
Sapers felt that there is still not enough parking spaces. A watchful eye was kept on handicap
spaces, and perhaps next year we should double the needed spaces.
South Cape Village: Charles Maintanis, Bob Wooldridge, and Don Megathlin(who rode in a
wheel chair for perspective) met to assess access issues. Mr. Megathlin plans to send a
Memorandum to the developer. Charles Maintanis recommends seven handicap spaces to serve
the new Sovereign Bank and Marshalls. Charles will keep in touch with Mr. Megathlin until this
is addressed and completed. Bob Wooldridge suggested the `pedestrian crossing' sign on Joy
Street needs another one at the other end. Also noted, the area needs more curb cuts. Bob
Wooldridge will write a letter with his suggestions for adjustments in order to be in compliance
with a cc: to the Town Manager. Another approach might be to contact the Federal Agency
about non-compliance issues if need be.
Beach Access: We have collected $470 to date. Kiwannis has pledged $200. Many groups have
been contacted about the fund-raising effort to raise $5,000 to purchase and install materials
necessary to provide beach access to people with mobility difficulties. Someone suggested
contacting the Women's Club, Banks, and stores. Bob Wooldridge spoke with Linda Steele at
Cape Cod Five Bank. Debi Dami will contact people at the Chamber of Commerce as well as
the Rotary Club. Marilyn Farren suggested tacking on$1.00 on every Beach Sticker. Another
suggestion was to add$5.00 on to the dog license fee since dogs use the beach. Dave
Delvecchio and Bruce, his assistant, are trying to publicize this effort with closed captioning.
Town Annual Inspections for Compliance: Charles Maintanis is doing annual inspections
around town, and there has been some ticketing at Deer Crossing. Charles is researching
compliance issues and fines. No one is allowed to park in an access aisle, for example.
