Minutes of the Meeting of the Mashpee Americans with Disabilities Act Committee,July 12,
2007
The Mashpee Americans with Disabilities Act Committee met Thursday,July 12,2007 at
Mashpee Town Hall Meeting Room Q.
Members in attendance:
Beverly Wooldridge(co-chair)
Charles Maintanis
Trish Parolski
Merton Sapers
Robert Wooldridge
Terrie Coop, Selectmen's Liaison
The minutes ofthe June 14,2007 meeting were reviewed and approved with the stipulation that
the sentence regarding the accessible units in the Mashpee Woods project be qualified. To the
best of our knowledge, there is nothing written into any permit regarding the number of visitable
and fully accessible. That information was provided by Laura Shufelt in response to a question
posed by Bob during Selectmen's and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings.
Regarding the Mashpee Woods and Asher's Path projects,Charlie will check the State
regulations regarding the number of fully accessible units required in each.
The appointments for FY 2008 have been approved by the Selectmen. Due to the absence of two
committee members, it was decided to postpone the election of officers until the August meeting.
Members in attendance were reminded to sign the book in the Town Clerk's office as soon as
possible.
Charlie reported that,at his suggestion,Mashpee Commons officials established four temporary
handicapped parking spaces on those days the Farmer's Market is open. The spaces are located
between the Farmer's Market set-up and CVS to compensate for the loss of the four spaces within
the market area.
Mort, dressed in official uniform, including badge, reported his parking patrol team has been
quite active and has issued tickets to several violators. Most recently was one issued just prior to
the meeting at the Cape Cod Rehab in Summerfield Park. The remaining patrol members are
waiting for LT Reed to issue necessary documentation and badges. Mort hopes that will happen
within the week and more teams can begin patrolling.
Bob brought up the recent series of articles regarding the increasing number of AlAheimer's
patients on the Cape. This could be used as another illustration of why efforts to improve access
is so important. Mort mentioned the numbers provided so far are probably on the low side
because many people do not register with the Alztheimer's Association or other groups tracking
the disabled.
Bob also mentioned correspondence from the Eastham, Public Access Committee(PACE)
indicating the progress they have made promoting the visitability concept. The Eastham Planning
Board fully agrees with the principle and will be providing information on visitability to every
planner/builder of new constructions and renovations. The town also is developing a policy that
will include visitability in private construction projects in addition to the current Chapter 40B
