Mert reported seven of the eight(or nine)parking patrol teams have received all necessary
training and materials from LT Read,Mashpee police Department. All seven teams have been
out patrolling in the last few weeks. The teams issued at least eight tickets in late July—early
August. Several of the tickets were subsequently voided by the Town Clerk because the tickets
were issued to people who had legitimate right to use the space but just forgot to display their
placard. Mert also noted there seems to be an unnecessary delay in forwarding the tickets from
the Police Department to the Town Clerk's office. He will look into the procedures to see what
can be done to speed the process.
As the number of tickets issued under this program grows it will soon be time to again raise the
issue of possibly designating these funds for ADA-related purposes. At future meetings,Mert
will attempt to obtain the statistics on number issued, number excused and amount of money
collected.
Also on the subject of revenues,Charlie is going to look into the possibility of obtaining approval
for the Building Department to issue fines for violations of Building Department regulations,
including handicapped parking and access.
Bob informed the committee of the handicapped parking arrangements implemented for the
Mashpee Night at the Pops. In all, more than 40 spaces were designated specifically for the
disabled and there was also a close-in drop-off point for disabled. Many thanks to Jim Vacarro,
of Mashpee Commons for his support to insure these spaces were provided. Mert mentioned
parking within the commons did not seem to be a problem that night. He was stationed in the
Coombs School lot to assist with Pops parking and noted only about 50 cars there.
Marilyn reported the substance of a conversation with an acquaintance who is a member of the
Barnstable Disability Commission. The Barnstable commission does not include representation
from any town officers or boards and this is making it difficult for them to gain support for their
programs and initiatives. Marilyn outlined the extensive official representation we have and how
it has enabled us to accomplish a great deal in a relatively short time. Charlie agreed and added
that our approach of taking small steps at a time has resulted in a much greater appreciation of
and attention to access issues throughout the town.
The meeting adjourned at 3:25 PM. The next meeting is scheduled for September 13,2007.
Respectfully submitted,
Robert H. Wooldridge
Secretary
