Mashpee Affirmative Action Committee
Meeting Minutes
April 27, 2010
Mashpee Town Hall, Meeting Room 2
Present: Co-Chair Maryanne Wray, Marilyn Farren, Deborah Vaughn, Co-Chair Kay Brown
Absent: Paul Perry
Also Present: Gail Wilson, Director Human Services
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting commenced at 5:08 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES:
A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes for January 26, 2010. All voted
unanimously.
AGENDA ITEMS:
Participation in Special Olympics
The Special Olympics invitation was presented to the Committee. The event will take place on
Friday, May 28. Ms. Vaughn shared the Special Olympics Committee's preference that the event
focus on the athletes without a specific No Place for Hate activity. However, members of the
Committee were invited to assist with the registration process. Ms. Vaughn described the process
of registration, noting that 30 schools have signed up to attend. A student will be assigned to each
school and will walk them through the registration process. Each escort will put together backpacks
and t-shirts in advance, which will be located at the registration table. Marilyn Farren added that
the ADL requested more information about the event, before providing NPFH materials for the
backpack, but Committee members agreed that the focus had changed and the added materials
would be unnecessary.
Opening ceremonies will begin promptly at 9:30 with a parade to include bagpipers, torch carriers,
Extreme Cheerleaders, Wampanoag dancers, members of the 102"d Intelligent Wing, Color Guard,
marching band, student volunteers and athletes. Matt Noise will be master of ceremonies and an
Acapella group will sing the National Anthem. Ms. Vaughn expects a number of political
representatives will be in attendance and possibly members of the Shriver fancily. Schools will
rotate among fifteen events and a back up plan will be available in case of rain. Olympic Town will
include such activities as Healthy Smiles, make your own frame, create a bookmark with the
builders club, design a beaded necklace with Wampanoag volunteers, face painting, airbrushed
tattoos and a d.j. Lunch will take place from 10:45-12:30 with donations from Mashpee
Firefighters, Mashpee Police, Chad's Ice Cream, New England Ice Cream, Costa Fruit, Ocean
Spray, Ring Brothers, Boarshead, Stop & Shop, Stanley Steamer, Aveeno and Christ the King
Church. Closing ceremonies will occur at 12:30 and all students will receive a medal.
Press releases will be sent next week and two weeks prior to the event. Fox 25 and the Cape Cod
Times will cover the event on May 28. It was agreed that Committee members will arrive at 9 a.m.
to assist with the registration process at the football field.
