Mashpee Affirmative Action Committee <br /> Meeting Minutes <br /> December 28, 2010 at 5:00 pm <br /> Meeting Room 2, Mashpee Town Hall <br /> Present: Co-Chair Maryanne Wray, Co-Chair Kay Brown, Marilyn Farren, Deborah Vaughn <br /> Also Present: Selectman Carol Sherman <br /> CALL TO ORDER <br /> The meeting opened at 5:05 p.m. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES-November 23. 2010 <br /> A motion was made by Ms.Farren to approve the minutes of November 23 '' 2010. Ms. Brown <br /> seconded the motion. All voted unanimously. <br /> OLD BUSINESS <br /> Charity Rock a-Thom <br /> Ms. Farren reported that the Affirmative Action Committee worked alongside the Quashnet School to <br /> promote the event sponsored by Roche Bros. Although the overall amount raised is unknown, Town Hall <br /> contributions totaled $40. Jane Emery extended a thank you for supporting the event and asked for the <br /> Committee's support of No Name Calling Day. <br /> Regarding Roche Bros.,Ms. Brown stated that her mother-in-law and friends had encountered problems <br /> in the store. Ms. Farren suggested gathering additional information about the situation in order to follow <br /> up. <br /> NEW BUSINESS <br /> Human Rights Club <br /> The week of January 24"', exam week, has been selected for the Human Rights Club to sponsor activities <br /> celebrating diversity and to encourage students to remain at the school for the entire day. The Affirmative <br /> Action Committee will co-sponsor one afternoon and will display materials about No Place for Hate. Ms. <br /> Vaughn announced that Effie Purdy, the Human Rights Club Advisor, planned to have the entire week co- <br /> sponsored by the Affirmative Action Committee and No Place for Hate. Ms. Vaughn stated that"Mix It <br /> Up Lunch" will take place on Monday in the elementary school and Wednesday in the high school. <br /> Students will be given a random number and will sit at the assigned table in order to have lunch with <br /> different students. <br /> A performance has been planned at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the high school and Ms. Purdy inquired <br /> whether the Committee could identify a dynamic speaker to address diversity in the community for 10 <br /> minutes prior to the performance. Ms. Farren indicated that she would contact the Anti-Defamation <br /> League for a recommendation of a local dynamic speaker. It was agreed that Thursday would be the day <br /> that the Committee would set up a table with promotional materials to distribute to students during the <br /> lunch hour. Ms. Vaughn also inquired whether the Affirmative Action Committee could fund three <br /> frames and enlargements of a photo that would be placed in locations throughout Mashpee. Ms. Wray <br /> responded that she has a poster that duplicates prints into a 4006 inch size. Ms. Vaughn stated that Ms. <br /> Purdy planned to have the wood shop make the frames in the shape of a peace sign and the cost was <br /> expected to be $50-$70 per picture. Ms. Wray indicated she could donate the usual cost of$20 per photo <br /> and Affirmative Action Committee/No Place for Hate could be added to the photo. <br />
