<br />Mashpee Affirmative Action Committee <br />Meeting Minutes <br />March 22, 2011 at 5:00 pm <br />Meeting Room 2, Mashpee Town Hall <br /> <br />Present: Co-Chair Maryanne Wray, Co-Chair Kay Brown, Deborah Vaughn <br />Also Present: Marilyn Farren, Selectman Carol Sherman <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />The meeting opened at 5:08 p.m. <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES-December 28, 2010 <br />Amotion was made by Ms. Wray to approve the minutes of December 28, 2010. Ms. Vaughn <br />seconded the motion. All voted unanimously. <br />OLD BUSINESS <br />Multi-Cultural Event, January 28, 2011 <br />Although the event was delayed by one day due to snow, there was a very good turnout of students, many <br />of whom signed a poster set up on the Affirmative Action table. Food and music were major features of <br />the event. Ms. Farren thanked Ms. Wray for her donation of picture enlargements which were framed by <br />the woodworking teacher. Effie Purdy, Human Rights Club Advisor, has expressed interest in working <br />with the Affirmative Action Committee annually to offer the event to students. Ms. Farren noted that <br />both Selectman Sherman and Selectman Cook attended the event. <br />Ms. Farren summarized the event to send to the ADL in order to receive credit for the activity. Ms. <br />requires that <br />participation in events or projects receive prior approval at least one month in advance. <br />NEW BUSINESS <br />Participation in Special Olympics <br />Ms. Vaughn announced that 350 athletes were expected for the Special Olympics, alongside 125 staff, and <br />th <br />represented record numbers. The 5 annual event will take place on May 20, 9-12:45. In place of a <br />cookout, the Boosters will be assisting with providing bagged lunches inside the field along with an ice <br />cream stand. Student volunteers have each been responsible for obtaining a $50 sponsorship for the <br />event. Students who have been unable to provide a $50 sponsorship will be donating items, such as <br />water, to the event. Ms. Wray, Ms. Farren and Selectman Sherman volunteered to assist with the event. <br />Ms. Vaughn noted that all volunteers must be CORI checked. Ms. Vaughn reported that <br />Cape Cod 5 were sponsors. Donated items such as water, napkins, white paper bags and mylar balloons <br />were still needed. Items such as cheese, cold cuts, vitamin water and cranberry juice have already been <br />donated by businesses. <br />will make flip books of the participants. Seventy books per hour could be created but the cost would be <br />$300 per hour, with a two hour minimum. Ms. Vaughn was hoping to identify a sponsor, such as <br />there would be no rain date. The event has expanded from 60 athletes during the first year of the event. <br />Ms. Vaughn announced that the 99 Restaurant <br />April 13 to support the Special Olympics. <br /> <br /> <br />
