r <br /> Mashpee Affirmative Action Committee <br /> Meeting Minutes <br /> September 27, 2011 at 5:00 pm <br /> Meeting Room 2, Mashpee Town Hall <br /> Present: Co-Chair Maryanne Wray, Co-Chair Kay Brown, Deborah Vaughn <br /> Also Present: Marilyn Farren, Selectman Carol Sherman <br /> CALL TO ORDER <br /> The meeting opened at 5:10 p.m. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES-March 22, 2011 <br /> A motion was made by Ms.Wray to accept the minutes of March 22, 2011. Ms. Vaughn seconded <br /> the motion. All voted unanimously. <br /> NEW BUSINESS <br /> Future"No Place for Hate"Events <br /> Ms. Farren reported that the Library Director was interested in working cooperatively on a project at the <br /> library. Ms. Vaughn inquired about an issue of meetings at the library and Selectman Sherman stated that <br /> meetings would be held at earlier times to accommodate the library's hours and that the Girl Scouts would <br /> be meeting at the Senior Center. <br /> Ms. Farren referenced a children's reading program and Jackson Gelman's "Pledge to the Parent" and <br /> message of diversity. The website will be reviewed for more information. Ms. Farren spoke with <br /> Myriam Zuber regarding the event, who recommended November as a good time to offer family programs <br /> in the theme of celebrating Thanksgiving. <br /> Selectman Sherman noted that students as young as kindergarten age were learning about the"no <br /> bullying" message. Ms. Farren reported that the students would be receiving a handbook to share with <br /> families about no bullying or hazing. <br /> Ms. Farren referenced a previously held food drive and recommended tapping into other community <br /> agencies in order to coordinate programs. <br /> Ms. Vaughn stated that Mashpee Cares was meeting at the library as a group of a variety of people who <br /> cared about the community and who became involved in order to help the students of Mashpee. Ms. <br /> Vaughn stated that discussion had involved drug and suicide prevention. Ms. Farren inquired about the <br /> ways in which the Affirmative Action Committee could become involved and Ms. Vaughn recommended <br /> contacting the Superintendent about the timing of the next meeting. Ms. Vaughn stated that last year's <br /> meetings served more as a think tank and that this year will focus on establishing programs. Ms. Farren <br /> will follow up and distribute information about the meeting to members of the Committee and <br /> recommended that Affirmative Action consider getting involved with Mashpee Cares. <br /> Selectman Sherman inquired about whether there were diversity programs available at the high school. <br /> Ms. Farren indicated that she would follow up and Effie Purdy was recommended as a point of contact. <br /> Selectman Sherman voiced her support of a food drive, particularly with the colder weather arriving.
