this. The group wants to focus on a community wide initiative. To have one message carried by all.
Suggestion that we could do a media presentation for Mashpee TV, could be a regular part of
programming, all school functions. Begin to educate! It was suggested we have an
educational/video/handout at the library to attract all age groups. This could be the first step in an
educational campaign. Also mentioned the importance of marketing to elders as well as youth, across
the age span, we need to look at the larger scope.
Discussion about target goals for the next meeting, define goal and work plan we want to focus on. Our
focus will be on Education/Prevention/Harm Reduction. Suggestion made to focus on Mashpee
businesses working with the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce, the EAP program. Educating the
community about the Good Samaritan Law. Also, educating the public about Narcan.
Discussion about having teens come to the Mashpee Cares meeting, possibly a youth committee.
Important to make the kids feel a part of the process, to get a youth perspective, maybe several teens
involved in key club or student council. Suggestion about running a group for teens. Possibly have an
incentive, the Boys &Girls Club? Recreation Department?
What about the individuals living with this disease, how can we help? NA,AA,Alateen no one would
answer the phone. We don't want to miss anyone, how to help individuals at each stage. What about
reentry/criminal side, after incarceration?
The police see those at the most vulnerable time, they are seeing crime on crime, most breaking and
entries are related to drug use. Individuals go to detox and come out and use again, what about
Recovery? Sober Homes? Randy Hunt has proposed some legislation regarding sober homes. There
have been some illegal sober homes.
At the next meeting the group will bring all these ideas to develop a timeline of what to focus on. What
the Committee does agree on is we want to begin our focus on a Prevention Strategy, educating
parents/students/businesses. Focus on one thing and then look at sustainability. Develop an
informational website, possibly request funding from the town.
NEXT MEETING: December 15, 2015 at the Mashpee Public Library
ADJOURNMENT: As there was no further business, Mike Richardson made a motion that the meeting
be adjourned at 7:20pm, Hope Shwom seconded the motion.
Respectfully submitted,
Gail Wilson, Clerk
