Board of Assessors Meeting Page <br /> NEV?/OLD BUSINESS: <br /> Board of Assessors Meeting Schedule <br /> Chairman Greig announced that the next scheduled <br /> Regular Board Meeting is Tuesday, Tune 25, at 6 :00 p.m. � <br /> The Internet <br /> David Bailey informed that tomorrow or the next day the <br /> Assessing Department ' s information is supposed to be on the <br /> Internet. It will include only what appears on the tax bill . <br /> the Owner ' s name, address , and the tax information . He expressed <br /> opinion that this is a bice step even though the data is brief , <br /> I He explained that if this works out, Assessing will have all. of <br /> I g <br /> Its information available on the Internet at an affordable cost, <br /> and the Department will not have any appraisers in the office in <br /> the near future. This will decrease the workload tremendously, <br /> as Assessing ' s Clerical Staff devotes about f Its time to <br /> appraisers and real estate brokers. Lengthy discussion followed. <br /> Property values Affected by the otIs Plume <br /> David Bailey informed {that he completed the study of <br /> property values in the Briarwood area that Ms . Nancy Caffyn I-lad <br /> requested. He took a sampling of 180 properties and tracked them <br /> from 1989to the present time. Findings show that from 1993 to <br /> 1996 , values in this area were dropping about to while valines in <br /> a similar area were increasing; this does present a problem. <br /> David Bailey farther informed that he spoke to <br /> Professor at Northeastern University who had performed a similar <br /> study of -an area in Woburn; her findings showed a correlation <br /> between distance from the "boot" site and influen' ce from adverse <br /> as well as positive publicity until the actual cleanup began and <br /> property values started -to climb back up. Mr. Bailey also spoke <br /> i to a Cambridge firm that prepares and actually does some <br /> litigation on superfund sites natlonal_1 . The firm was quite <br />�I positive about the possibility of people being <br /> able to <br /> financially <br /> recover . The firm' s Evaluation Specialist will be <br /> calling Mr . Bailer tomorrow and will be able to, at the very <br /> least, dive names of other .law firms who specialize in sir filar <br /> matters . <br /> Vice Chairman Porter initiated lengthy discussion. <br /> David Bailey expressed opinion that Assessing has prepared all <br /> the information ' It should concerning this important issue, he <br /> will now place the information in Ms . Nancy Caffyn ' s hands ., <br />
