2
Capital Improvement Program Committee
Minutes
December 15, 2005
Fire.Department: (continued)
Substation-$1,8122000...
South.Iashpee Fire Station has been an ongoing request of the Fire
Department which is deemed a priority as a result of response time,
continued construction in this area and high loss value. The Insurance
Service Office (ISO)also considers any structures located cher than five
miles from a fire station to be in a non-protected area.
It was noted that space reductions were made to the 2001 headquarters
station project clue to the need for a substation in this area. Town owned
land on Iced Brook Road has been identified for the substation building.
Price estimates have increased by approximately $800,000 as a result of
increased construction costs. Presently the estimated construction cost is
$250 per square foot including 20%for soft costs. The space estimate
remains modest at 6040 square feet.
It was noted the Planning& Construction Committee has a request for the
South Mashpee fire substation, an estimated$2 million bond in their FY0
capital improvement program request. It was agreed the Fire Chief would
meet with the Planning & Construction Committee to discuss the needs of
the Fire Department.
Vehicle Comp ting-.$500,000:
In-vehicle computing will enable the Fire &Rescue Department to access
IS, dispatch, and pre-fire planning data rapidly in all response vehicles.
It would also make available, live dispatch naps, precinct data and
provide lure vehicle location. vehicle computing has been a capital
request of the Fire Department for the past two years.
With updated technology, vehicle computing is now standard equipment
for fire and rescue vehicles. The cost is approximately $5,000 per vehicle.
It was noted that Information Technology has submitted a capital request
for a town-vide wireless mesh network that would enhance public safety.
The IT Director will be consulted regarding this concern and to avoid
duplication. Discussion followed with respect to securing federal grant
tunes for this purpose.
