A FEW GLITCHES and ISSUES — The refrigerator in the new building
was dented and was to be replaced and the finish on the floor needed to be
rebuffed.
Also, there were several "coffee issues" which must be resolved, and a
meeting of the Council was scheduled at the new center for February 2 at
10:00 a.m.
TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM — The subcommittee of COA met with
the Town Administrator and Town Assessor to discuss increasing the
property tax abatement program for volunteers from"$500 to $600 per
household. The Director subsequently attended a Selectmen meeting on
Monday, January 3, 2005, to present the proposal, and it was approved
handily.
Also, the rules governing the program provide that a volunteer can be in one
department for two years only. Also, in an effort to assist Jim in choosing
volunteers, a subcommittee will review applications for those positions.
Rose Shanker, Jeanne Noussee and Arthur Weinstein will be involved in that
effort.
SENIOR AIDE — The Director is pleased to announce the addition of a
Senior Aide through the Mature Workers Program administered by ESCCI.
April Dugas, a former nurse, joined the senior center for the morning shift
(8:30 to 12:30) on Monday, January 3.
MINI VAN— Problems occurred during the month with the front end of the
new Mini-Van. The van was in the shop for a week with no replacement
provided by the manufacturer—the second instance of the same problem.
"BREAD ISSUE"—Jim included a letter from a concerned senior about his
treatment during the roll-out of days-old bread from either Stop & Shop or
Roche's. There is uncertainty about how to proceed in restoring some order
to keep in check those who far exceed their share of the bread or pastries. It
was suggested that perhaps a volunteer group could be assembled to review
the situation, but the decision was put off until another day. Bonnie's role in
overseeing the process is nonexistent. Jim included in the Council packet of
information last month a copy of the "Senior Center Behavioral Policies and
Procedures", but it was decided to review the procedures and make decisions
about them at another time.
