The ten-
year old track is used extensively by the public and school system. The
$66,000 project has been an ongoing proposal in the capital improvement
program for the past three years*
The track repair and resurfacing project would remove areas worn to the
base and incorporate additional layers of new binder and rubber material
to meet the grade of the existing surface. An ultra violet resistant
application would then be applied to protect the surface from the
degradation causes by the sun's rays. Markings would then be added in
accordance with regulations for state high schools.
T'he School Department would be responsible for maintenance of the
track. Maintenance assumptions would be agreed upon nth the installer.
The life expectancy of the resurfacwng material is ten years.
If the track is not refurbished soon, the entire surface may need to be
replaced. fetters of support were included in the project application,
Svnth ticTurf: i
number of youth organizations requested Mr. Fripp to review the
potential for liming a synthetic turf playing field at the high school. Thi&
would allow unlimited and year-round use of the field without damage to
the playing field. The estimated cost is $950,000.
The project if considered by the Committee could be phased. Due to the
lack of playing fields; the synthetic turf Meld would assist to ease the
burden on the fields at Heritage 'ark. The need for fertilization and
watering is eliminated. It was noted that it may be a cost effective
proposal as the project may be introduced to outside athletic groups.
Maintenance is considered minimal. The turf has an eight to ten year
warranty. If approved, Mashpee would be the first town on the Cape to
have this type of facility, fetters of support were also part of the
application proposal.
